Tips, tricks and tutorial for S60 Smart Phones

S60 phones include some built-in applications. There are still hundred (or may be thousand) of S60 applications out there that you can install on your phones to increase your productivity or simply for fun. Where can we find more S60 applications? These are some sites that you can start with:

  • Handango – It is the largest online store that distributes applications for smart phones and PDA. You can find S60 applications under Symbian OS category. When you browse through the list, make sure to download applications for S60 or Series 60.

  • Nokia Software Market – It is an online store, run by Nokia and OpenBit, which sells applications for Nokia phones, including Nokia’s S60 phones.

  • Web site of your phone model. You can usually visit the web site of your phone model and then download some free software from there. For example, if you have Nokia 6680, you can visit this URL and download Movie Director, Photo Editor, LifeBlog, Adobe Reader, QuickOffice and many more. Some of them are already included in the CD-ROM shipped with the phone though.

This tip shows you how to have your own name on the idle screen (look at the picture below, we have “S60Tips.com” below the operator name). The name is not only displayed on the Idle screen, but on the screen saver too.

How can we do that? It is very simple. Open Profiles application then create a new profile by selecting Options | Create new menu. Set the profile name to whatever you want and then activate your new profile. You will have your name in the Idle screen.

How do you usually delete an item in S60 applications, for example, in Contacts or Messaging applications? I have noticed that some people select Options | Delete to delete an item. Don’t you know that you can also press C key to delete an item? It is faster because you only need one click, instead of several clicks.

Just remember to press C key when you want to delete something in S60 applications. Most S60 applications support this feature, including Contacts, Messaging, Notes, Calendar, Gallery, File Manager and many more.
