You won’t see this problem on Windows XP. It happens on Windows Vista only. Is there a solution to this problem? Should you just find an old computer with Windows XP? I found an interesting discussion at Nokia Support Discussions. Basically, what you need to do is retrying the update; but do not remove the USB cable or turn off the phone.

Here is the detail:

• Once you see dialogs like screenshots above; close Nokia Software Updater from Task Manager. You can display Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del or right click the task bar and select Task Manager menu.
• Do NOT remove USB cable from the phone or turn off the phone!
• Restart Nokia Software Updater. It will ask you to reinstall the software on the phone. Press Reinstall button and then press Retry button on the next dialog. If there in an instruction to remove battery and turn on the phone, do NOT do it. I tried it and it didn’t work.

PS: If the instruction above does not work; you may have to find an old computer with Windows XP.

First of all, sorry for the lack of update on this blog recently.

As you may know, I maintain this blog during my spare time only. Unfortunately, I have been very busy in the last couple of weeks. I was looking for a new job. I have decided to resign from my current company. My last working day would be beginning of next month.

What is going to happen to this blog after I quit? I will be trying to keep this blog alive although my new job will most probably not be related to S60. That’s all I can say for now.

I had this problem several times with some other applications on Windows Vista. In most cases, the solution was just press “Retry” button and the un-installation should went fine. Unfortunately, PC Suite doesn’t provide “Retry” button. What should we do?

One of the solutions is by using CCleaner, a free utility for Windows. It allows us to uninstall an application using the default Windows Installer.

If you run CCleaner and select Tools tab on the left side of the main window, select “Nokia PC Suite” and click Run Uninstaller button.

If you see a similar dialog as above, just click Retry button to continue.

Previously, I featured Google Search App for S60, which is a standalone client application for Google Search. Unfortunately, the shortcut in the idle menu works using Pencil key (a.k.a. Edit key) only. What’s the problem? Many S60 devices don’t have Pencil key any more. What to do then?

Don’t worry. You don’t even need Google Search App. What you need is your current Web browser. Don’t you know that you can launch the default Web browser by long pressing “0″ key? If you set Google Search as the default home page, you’ll get similar result as using Google Search App. Follow the step-by-step instructions below.

• Launch Web browser.
• Select Options | Settings | General menu.
• On the Access point section, select the access point you want to use.
• On the Home page section, enter http://m.google.com/m.

• Exit Web browser and you should be ready.
• On the idle screen, long press “0″ key and you’ll be directed to Google Search home page.

The only problem with this application is that it supports Pencil key only as shortcut. Many S60 devices nowadays don’t have this key any more. I’ll discuss more on how to use Google Search without Pencil key in the next posting.

After downloading Nokia Share Online 3.0, you have to activate Ovi service. It just means entering your user name and password. It’s that easy…

After that, each time you take picture, you can just select “Post to ovi” icon (see screenshot below). You can select the icon from Camera or Gallery application.

Update (11-Feb-2008): Note that not all countries are supported by Shares on Ovi yet. Please see the list of supporting countries at this page.

Update (12-Feb-2008): Not sure if everybody else has the problem with geotagging. I noticed that the current Share on Ovi does not import geotagging information (tagged using Nokia Location Tagger) properly yet.

I am going to discuss are three YouTube applications that I think are the best. All of them works have common features, such as:

• play video in full screen,
• search videos,
  list popular videos,
  find related videos.

emTube - The Best

• In my opinion, emTube is the best YouTube client so far.
  It uses standard S60 user interface.
  You can save the videos to your devices.
  It supports accelerometer on N95 and N82. When you rotate your device, the video is also rotated.

• MobiTubia is the winner of OpenC competition that was held by Nokia last year.
• It has similar interface to Nokia’s Video Center. It runs mostly in landscape mode.

YouTube Mobile - The Official

• This is the official client application provided by Google.
• It is a Java application; so you can expect a slow performance.
• It is integrated with your YouTube account; so you can upload your videos.
• I have a little bit a problem with this application. Sometimes, it is trying to connect to data connection (via cellular network) although I have explicitly chosen WiFi connection.

First, we are now part of Nokia?s new service brand, “Ovi”. As of Today, the Twango brand will be a fond memory. We are now Share on Ovi.

For those who don’t know about Share for Ovi (twango), it is media sharing service; similar to flickr. You can upload pictures (as well as video) and then share them with your friends. Personally, I like the user interface of Share for Ovi. It is very clean and easy to navigate. It has a great potential. And by the way, they have a mobile version of their site too - http://mobile.twango.com. Point your camera to the barcode below (note that the URL may change in the future).

The current service is still beta. As such, there are still some important features missing. For example, the integration with the device is not seamless because lack of mobile client (this should be coming soon). The GPS coordinate embedded in the pictures, for example using Nokia Location Tagger, is also not parsed properly yet.

How do we upload and share media using Share for Ovi?

• You can always use PC to upload your media files via http://www.twango.com (the URL may change in the future). You can also use Windows XP Web Publishing Wizard, which allows you to upload a large numbers of media files.
• How about mobile devices? Since there is no mobile client available yet; the only possibility is using email. Now you can use Nokia Online Share 3.0 to upload to Share on Ovi.
• A couple of months back, The PhoneBoy Blog has posted a trick to upload your media files via Nokia Lifeblog.
  Unfortunately, I was not able to use the trick (not sure why though)

It’s been a while since my last posting here at S60Tips.com. Many of you may be wondering; where have I been lately? Am I still blogging? Short answer: I have been busy with many other things; so this blog was quite last month.

Here is the list of some “other things” that kept me very busy after office hours:

• I was involved in the development of Nokia Location Tagger. This application is now available at Nokia Beta Labs. If you have N95 or N82 and haven’t tried this application, give it a try. Please leave your comments to my blog posting at Nokia Beta Labs.
• I was busy updating my open source project, Screenshot for Symbian OS. There have been requests from many users about adding shortcuts that don’t use <Edit> key (a.k.a. <Pencil> key). I added a new shortcut, <#>+<*>, in the latest  version. It wasn’t as easy as I thought. For more information about the detail technical problem, please see my posting at Forum Nokia Blogs.
• Last but not least: finishing my book. The book is now still under review and it will go to the final editing soon. Unfortunately, I couldn’t disclose the title of the book yet.

There is actually one more thing, i.e. watching the stock market falling down in the first 3 weeks of January… just kidding.

Anyway, I should have more free time now and keeps updating this blog again. So, stay tune!
