The question is how can we store personal information on S60 device? Never use Notes application! If your device is stolen, you will be in trouble. Older S60 devices used to include Wallet application for this purpose. Unfortunately it is now removed. What is our solution now? There are some third party applications (unfortunately they are not free).

Handy Safe

Handy Safe is probably the most popular application to store confidential information on S60 device. It stores credit card details, user names, addresses, insurance policies and much more. There is also a PC application, called Handy Safe Desktop, which allows you to synchronize the information to the PC.

Phone Wallet

Phone Wallet is much cheaper than Handy Safe. The features are quite similar to Handy Safe. What makes it different is no PC application. How about backup? No worry. Phone Wallet allows you to backup your personal information to a file, which can be transferred to a new phone.

Update (22-June-2008): There is also a Java application to store personal information, called MobileKnox. The user interface is not as nice as the two above, but it supports many other devices.

It’s the end of the year. S60Tips.com has collected third party applications for S60 devices and chosen the best third party applications in year 2007. All applications developed by Nokia are excluded from the list. Feel free to agree or disagree….

Business: Quick Office Premier

If you need to edit and view your Office documents, Quick Office Premier is the one that you need.

Communication: Truphone

VoIP is definitely the hottest topic this year. There are so many VoIP applications for S60 platform; but Truphone is the one that really does the job.

Game: Robo

Robo is an addictive puzzle game that is similar to Sokoban. It is targeted for casual gamers (read: most of us).

Just for Fun: Light Saber for Nokia N95

When Nokia disclosed that N95 has built-in accelerometer; some developers started developing “crazy” applications. One of them is light saber for Nokia. May the Force be with you….

Multimedia: DivX Player

DivX Player was suffered from audio synchronization problem when first released last year. This year, a new DivX Player was released and the problem was fixed.

Online: GMail Mobile

Another application that was first released last year but got updated with several improvements. It is claimed to be faster with the same functions as Gmail on the Web.

Travel: Google Maps for Mobile

Google Maps was first released last year. This year Google has released several major improvements, i.e.:

• Native support for S60 3rd devices (which means faster performance).
• Added support to GPS module.
• Added a location finder based on cellular network (for those who don’t have GPS module, this is a very interesting feature).

Utility: Y-Browser

If you are an advanced user, a good file manager is a must-have application. Y-Browser is one of the best file managers for S60 3rd Edition.

Before reading this posting, please note that this is a very technical tip. What is it all about? As some of you may know that starting from S60 3rd Edition, every single application (.sis/.sisx) has to be signed. The signing ensures integrity of the application so that nobody can tamper with. Besides that, it also ensures that you can only install trusted applications on your device.

Why do we need to sign S60 3rd applications with our own certificate then? There are more and more S60 3rd applications that are distributed unsigned. For example:

• Screenshot. This application is actually developed by me. I started distributing the unsigned version of this application because Symbian Signed process takes too long. However, I am still distributing the signed version of this application because many users don’t want to bother signing applications.
• ActiveFile. According to S60Tips.com’s last polling, ActiveFile is the most popular file manager application for S60 3rd Edition.
• GNUBox. GNUBox is a small application for your cell phone that allows you to create Internet connection on your device using PC’s Internet connection. This is a useful feature for devices without WiFi support, such as Nokia N71 and N73.
• TaskSpy. TaskSpy is a task manager for Symbian OS devices. It allows you to get more control and information over running tasks on your mobile phone. The developers decided to release unsigned version of TaskSpy because lack of time of Symbian Signed process.

The question now is how to sign S60 3rd application? There is a comprehensive tutorial on Mobile9. It is a very comprehensive and good tutorial, so I don’t want to repeat everything here.

Earlier this month, Dominique Hugo, the developer of FExplorer, the most popular file manager for S60 1st/2nd Edition released a version for S60 3rd Edition. A few days later, Alie Lee sent me a copy of ActiveFile, another file manager for S60 3rd Edition. Interestingly, I just learnt that Alie Lee is originally from the same country as me, Indonesia.

So far, I noticed there are at least five file managers for S60 3rd Edition. The good news is all of them are FREE!

ActiveFile

This file manager is not as popular as others. I knew this file manager because the developer has kindly send the installer file to me. One thing that I like from this file manager is support of two navigation tabs. So, you can view one folder in the first tab and browse to another folder in the second tab. This is really useful for example if we want to copy from one folder to another. It’s pretty nice feature.

FExplorer

As I said above, this is the most popular FExplorer for S60 1st/2nd Edition devices. I am pretty sure most of you have ever used this application. This file manager has other additional features, such as compress memory, view running processes and tasks, display system information, etc.

SExplorer

As far as I know, SExplorer is the first freeware application for S60 3rd Edition. This application is developed by Simon Judge. For you who don’t know about Project Gutenberg:

Project Gutenberg is the first and largest single collection of free electronic books, or eBooks. Michael Hart, founder of Project Gutenberg, invented eBooks in 1971 and continues to inspire the creation of eBooks and related technologies today.

There are thousand of free e-books on Project Gutenberg web site. Unfortunately, they are normally not in MobiPocket Reader format. However, you can convert them using MobiPocket Creator.
