Shortcut #1: Long-press Menu key

Long-pressing menu key will bring you the tasks list. It is useful to switch between applications or kill a running task. For more information about this shortcut, please see “Killing Applications from Applications List“.

Shortcut #2: Call key

Pressing Call key will bring Logs application and display the last called phone numbers.

Furthermore, pressing Call key in the Messaging application will send your message. For more information, please see “Sending Message with Call key“.

Shortcut #3: Long-press 1 key

Long-pressing 1 key on the idle screen will dial your voice message number.

Note that, there might be a problem with some operators and devices that the voice message number is not assigned automatically. In this case, the first time you long-press 1 key, you can assign the number manually.

Shortcut #4: Long-press 0 key

Long-pressing 0 key will launch the default Web browser.

Shortcut #5: Long-press Media key

Long-pressing Media key will launch the default Music player application.

What is Speed Dial? Basically it is a small application that allows you to assign a number, from 2 to 9, to a specific phone number. For instance, you can press long “2″ in the idle screen and the phone will dial the assigned phone number (see picture below).

How to assign Speed Dial? There is an application, called Speed Dial application, which is normally located under Tools folder. Note that different devices may have different folder name. Basically you can assign a phone number to any number from “2″ to “9″. How about number “1″? It is always reserved for voice messaging number.

Besides using Speed Dial application, you can assign it from the idle screen menu as well. Just press long the number you want to assign. If the number has not been assigned to any phone number, the phone will ask you whether you want to assign it or not.

Compatible devices: S60 1st, 2nd, 3rd Edition, Nokia Nseries Nokia Eseries.

We can disable this sound by pressing Multimedia key and then select Configure menu. At the end of the settings, there is Sounds option. If we change this to output, pressing Multimedia key will not produce any sound.

Compatible devices: s60 3rd Edition, Nokia Nseries.

I notice this symbol has been available on many S60 phones, including Nokia N-Series and E-Series.

So, what does this symbol mean? For me, it looks like “i” stands for “internet“. You press long this key (read: press and hold), it will launch the default web browser. Starting from S60 3rd FP1, it is S60 OSS Web browser application. Before that, it is Services application.

As I mentioned in my last blog that RealPlayer has become my primary video player right. Now, I would like to share some useful shortcuts in RealPlayer for S60.

• Up and Down key: These keys are used to fast forward and rewind the video respectively.
• Left and Right key (or Volume key on some devices): These keys are used to change the sound volume.
• 2 key: This might be the most useful shortcut. You can switch between full screen and normal mode by pressing 2 key.

Compatible devices: S60 2nd FP3, 3rd Edition, Nokia N-Series, Nokia E-Series.

*#92702689# (*#war0anty#) – Display the life timer information of your S60 phone, i.e. the total time of phone call (in minutes). Some users have asked how to reset this timer; as far as I know the only way to reset it is by flashing the phone.

*#7780# (*#rst0*) – This will soft reset your phone. It is different from *#7370# because all data, like contacts, calendar and notes, are not removed. It will only reset the phone settings, such as profiles, themes and shortcuts. The default lock code is 12345.

There is another key combination which is used to hard reset the phone (similar to #*7370). It is useful in some cases, for example when the phone cannot reboot. The trick is by switching off the phone then press and hold Call key (Green key) + * key + 3 key + power button for a couple of seconds. Note that you have to press and hold the four keys at the same time; otherwise it won’t reset the phone. This key combination doesn’t work on some S60 phones.

Update (12-Aug-06): Thanks to Jukka for the correction. You don’t need keep pressing Call key + * + 3 + Power.

There are two ways which you can use:

• Press and hold previous or next button in the main screen. They are the buttons that you use to go to the previous or next track. If you press and hold the previous button, you will rewind the song. Similarly, if you press and hold the next button, you will fast forward the song.
• Press and hold 4 or 6 key to rewind or fast forward the song.

Note that S60 OSS Browser is usually called “Web” in the menu and it is usually located in My Own folder (it may be different between phones). Don’t get confused with Services application, which is the old Web browser.

There are some useful shortcuts in S60 OSS Browser. For example, you can press # key to zoom out the page or press * key to zoom in the page. Here is the list of shortcuts in S60 OSS Browser:

• # – Zoom out the page.

• * – Zoom in the page.

• 1 – Open your Bookmarks.

• 2 -Open dialog to find text in the page.

• 3 – Return to the previous page.
• 5 – Select window. This is useful when you are visiting a web page that opens pop-up window. Otherwise this feature may not be used so often.

• 8 – Switch to the full page view and back to the normal view.

• 9 – Enter and go to a different Web page.
