I have collected top 5 shortcuts that are very useful on S60 devices. Note that different S60 device may have different key layout. That’s why, you may find one or two of the keys below are not available on your device.

Shortcut #1: Long-press Menu key

Long-pressing menu key will bring you the tasks list. It is useful to switch between applications or kill a running task. For more information about this shortcut, please see “Killing Applications from Applications List“.

Shortcut #2: Call key

Pressing Call key will bring Logs application and display the last called phone numbers.

Furthermore, pressing Call key in the Messaging application will send your message. For more information, please see “Sending Message with Call key“.

Shortcut #3: Long-press 1 key

Long-pressing 1 key on the idle screen will dial your voice message number.

Note that, there might be a problem with some operators and devices that the voice message number is not assigned automatically. In this case, the first time you long-press 1 key, you can assign the number manually.

Shortcut #4: Long-press 0 key

Long-pressing 0 key will launch the default Web browser.

Shortcut #5: Long-press Media key

Long-pressing Media key will launch the default Music player application.

Some of you may have used Speed Dial application quite a lot. This posting is a tutorial for you who are not familiar with Speed Dial.

What is Speed Dial? Basically it is a small application that allows you to assign a number, from 2 to 9, to a specific phone number. For instance, you can press long “2″ in the idle screen and the phone will dial the assigned phone number (see picture below).

How to assign Speed Dial? There is an application, called Speed Dial application, which is normally located under Tools folder. Note that different devices may have different folder name. Basically you can assign a phone number to any number from “2″ to “9″. How about number “1″? It is always reserved for voice messaging number.

Besides using Speed Dial application, you can assign it from the idle screen menu as well. Just press long the number you want to assign. If the number has not been assigned to any phone number, the phone will ask you whether you want to assign it or not.

It seems not only me who don’t like the sound of multimedia key. Some of the latest S60 phones add a new key, called Multimedia key, which is used to display additional shortcuts on the screen. By default, if you press they key, it produces sound.

We can disable this sound by pressing Multimedia key and then select Configure menu. At the end of the settings, there is Sounds option. If we change this to output, pressing Multimedia key will not produce any sound.
