Are you looking for a universal remote control for your electronic devices? Is one of your remote controls broken? Psiloc irRemote might be the answer to your questions.

If you own S60 device that has InfraRed (IR), which most S60 devices do, you can install irRemote. There are many audio and audio devices that can be controlled by irRemote, including air conditioner, CD/DVD player, television and many more. The database of compatible devices is growing. You can also contribute to the database by uploading the remote codes on http://irremote.psiloc.com/Wizard.aspx.

Click here to download the trial version of Psiloc irRemote

PS: I have tried the application on my personal Toshiba television and it works pretty nicely. The only drawback is because the InfraRed port of Nokia N95 is on the left side of the phone; so the usability is not that nice.

Smartphoneware just released a desktop application for S60 3rd, called Tracker. Tracker is a fully customizable desktop application with hundreds of functions and possibilities transforming your S60 device into a powerful organizer.

Tracker for s60 3rd edition

What can you do with Tracker? You can have desktop-like appearance on your device, such as adding shortcuts to applications, folders, notes and speed contacts. The right screenshot below an example of notes.

Tracker replaces the default S60 task manager. It is definitely better than the default one because you can get more information, such as free memory, free space, even detail information about application (see right screenshot).

How do you normally enter new contact information from a business card to your Contacts application? For me, sometimes I enter it manually on the phone. In some other occasions, I enter it to my PC on Microsoft Outlook and then synchronize it to the phone.

Is there an automatic way? The answer is yes. InziSoft has developed an application, called BizReader. It allows us to capture business card from the phone’s camera and then save it to the Contacts application.

How does BizReader perform? Does it really deliver its promise? Since there is no “standard” of business card, BizReader doesn’t always parse the business card information properly. It works pretty well when parsing numbers, such as phone number. It doesn’t always give good result when parsing characters, such as address or email address. No worry though… because you can still edit the result before saving it to the Contacts application.

One thing to note is that the price of BizReader is a little bit high. If you don’t exchange business card very often, this application may not be for you.

Click here to download the trial version BizReader for S60 3rd Edition

Compatible devices: S60 3rd Edition, Nokia Nseries, Nokia Eseries.

Update (30-April-2007): Apparently Nokia has also silently released a business card reader. Somehow, I missed Darla Mack’s post, Nokia releases N73 Business Card app. Interestingly, this application is not widely available to all users. That’s why I missed it. According to Darla, it is available to China market only, but it should work on ordinary S60 3rd devices too.

In my last posting, I discussed ImageExpo that allows us to project our phone’s screen to a PC. This time, I am going to discuss Psiloc Wireless Presenter.

It has a feature that is similar to ImageExpo, that is projecting phone’s screen to PC. However, its main feature is actually controlling our PC from the phone. For instance, you can control Power Point presentation via your phone. In other words, you are using your phone as a “remote control” to your PC.

Imagine that you want to do presentation on your client using PowerPoint. What you have to do is copy your PowerPoint slide to the phone. At your client side, you just transfer the file from your phone to a PC and then use Psiloc Wireless Presenter to do the presentation.

ImageExpo is the ideal presentation and demonstration tool for Symbian devices and applications: ImageExpo enables displaying the phone screen on a PC or video projector in real time via Bluetooth, USB or Internet connection. It brings maximum attention and quality to any application, service or device related presentation.

Basically there are two parts of the software. The first part is an agent installed on phone. The second part is a PC application that connects to the phone and display the screen of the phone. You can then connect the PC to a projector. The picture below shows the architecture of ImageExpo.

As you can see above, you can connect the phone to the PC via Internet, Bluetooth or USB. You can also send the key and mouse events from your PC to the phone. Basically the PC will be a remote control to the phone.

The picture below shows the screenshot of the PC application of ImageExpo.

GameLoft’s Brain Challenge is actually a rather old game. It was released last year (2006). I haven’t featured this game so far because I didn’t realize that this game is available for S60 platform.

It was started when my friend showed me a game on Nintendo DS, called Brain Age. I thought it is a very cool game. I was wondering whether similar game is available for S60 devices. A couple of days later, there was announcement from Nokia at GDC 2007 (Game Developer’s Conference) that they are going to release a game called Brain Challenge in their latest gaming platform. This announcement led me to GameLoft’s web site and I found the Java version of this game is already available. Cool!

What is Brain Challenge? It is game that helps you to exercise your brain as mentioned in GameLoft’s web site:

Just like your body, your brain needs to exercise to stay in shape. Maintaining it simply involves completing little exercises without pain, stress, or boredom. That’s where Brain Challengeâ„¢ comes in! It’s like a real vitamin boost for your brain. Brain Challenge is more than just a game or program.

There are several mini games inside Brain Challenge that are divided into four categories, Logic, Math, Visual and Memory. The screenshots below the two sample games from Brain Challenge.

The game on the left side is called Balanced. Basically, you have to find the heaviest thing shown on the picture. The game on the right side is called Tiled. What you have to do here is arrange the tile to match the one shown at the top of the screen. I think you will get a rough idea how the game play is.

Now, it comes to the trickiest part. Where can we download or buy the game? After searching on the Internet for about an hour, I finally realized that this game is sold via operator only. So, if you want to buy the game, please visit your operator’s portal. This is the only bad thing about this game, it’s not easy to buy and download the game. Why don’t they just list their game in Handango or other sites?

Compatible devices: S60 1st, 2nd, 3rd Edition, Nokia Nseries, Nokia Eseries.
