Update (9-July-2008): NSU now officially supports Windows Vista. See announcement here.
Update (12-June-2008): If your NSU crashes while updating the firmware, try the tip from other posting. In most cases, the update should work (but I cannot guarantee).
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a posting about how to update firmware on Windows Vista using Nokia Software Updater (NSU). The tip works for a couple of weeks before Nokia released an updated version of NSU that doesn’t work at all on Windows Vista. What to do now? Waiting for Nokia released the next version of Windows Vista? Looking for a PC with Windows XP?
One of the readers of this blog, Harris, recently posted a comment on how to run NSU on Windows Vista. Here is the summary:
- Right click the NSU shortcut on Windows Desktop or Start menu and click Properties.
- Select Compatibility tab.
- Enable Run this program in compatibility mode for check box. Select Windows XP (Service Pack 2). This will run NSU in Windows XP mode.
-
Now you should be able to run NSU on Windows Vista. If NSU crashes at the beginning of firmware update, try my previous tip.
WARNING: Since NSU on Windows Vista is NOT officially supported by Nokia, use this tip at your own risk! I am not responsible for any damage on your phone.

Thanks for the tip, and it works. I\’m new to Windows Vista and got really mad when I couldnt update my phone. But now it seems to work as a clockwork!

Don\’t try it. I followed the above mentioned steps
and the NUS crashed while the update was in progress
on my phone. I received the usual message that the
Nokia Software Layer had crashed. That scared the
shit out of me.
I suggest you wait until a NUS is available for Vista
or take your phone to a Nokia Service Point and let
those guys update your firmware.

@Massimo: Have you tried my other tip, http://www.s60tips.com/2008/04/20/nokia-software-updater-problem-on-windows-vista/ ?
You are right that Windows Vista crashes in the middle of updating. Normally you should be able to recover it by restarting NSU (without restarting the phone).
