Now you can create, share and scan bar code on your S60 devices. Today, Nokia announced a new service, called Mobile Codes, that allow us to create 2D bar code online. What is bar code? According to Wikipedia:
A barcode (also bar code) is a machine-readable (uses dark ink on white substrate to create high and low reflectance which is converted to 1’s and 0’s) representation of information in a visual format on a surface.
There are basically three types of bar code, i.e. linear, stacked and 2D (matrix). The left picture below shows an example of linear bar code. It encodes “S60Tips.com”. The right picture shows an example of 2D bar code. It encodes http://www.s60tips.com”.

You can create 2D bar code from Nokia’s new service, Mobile Codes. Note that it is currently in beta version. That’s why the URL still points to an IP address. There are also many other web sites that are able to generate bar codes, either linear or 2D. You can just Google them.
How about bar code reader? There are several applications that can scan bar code, i.e.:
My favorite one is Kaywa Reader (see screenshot below).
Compatible devices: S60 3rd Edition, Nokia Nseries, Nokia Eseries.

Oops, what happened there? The end should go like: Kaywa’s reader is based on 3GVision’s technology which is “installed in over 75 percent of Japanese handsets” (their own claim).

antony: I agree with you about quickmark. My review on quickmark is here: http://www.gsmblog.net/article.do?keyword=barcode-reader-test-quickmark
The disadvantage of quickmark is that it doesn’t work on Symbian 3rd edition (their nokia suport in general is kinda lousy)

I tested different barcode readers that run on my E90 (Symbian 3rd edition) and put results here: http://wiki.version6.net/nokia_barcode

If you are looking to scan 1D codes (UPC and EAN) try ZebraScan at http://www.annotatio.de
It will also look up the product name for you and connect you to Google, EBay, Amazon so you easily find product or price information.

Nokia barcode reader:
If you have a Nokia N82, N93, N93i, N95, N95 8GB, E66, E71, E90 or 6220 Classic (APAC variants) you will find the Nokia barcode reader preinstalled on your device, ready to scan mobile codes around you.
You can also install the Nokia barcode reader onto Nokia N80. Simply, download the application onto your computer for free and transfer it to your device using Nokia PC Suite. For more information visit the Nokia N80 Support pages. Additionally, you can use the Download! application on your Nokia N80 to get the Nokia barcode reader straight to your device. The Download! application, however, is only available through certain operators and you should keep in mind charges for data transfers.
Get other code readers for camera phones
Don’t give up even if your device does not support the Nokia barcode reader. Here you will find four alternative code readers for download that work with a number of Nokia devices.
All of the following applications support the web address data type used by our mobile code generator; compatibility with the other data types we support (phone number and text/email address) will vary. Check the application provider’s website for the data types and codes supported by the specific reader. Or find out for yourself by testing them out. New features and new phone models are constantly being added.
