March 2007

I am pretty sure that all of you have heard about blog (otherwise you won’t read this). The concept of Jaiku is similar to blog, which is online diary. You can write your activities using your phone, in this case S60 device. Your friends can read about your activities from their phones too. Furthermore, Jaiku allows you to put a badge on your blog or web site so that your friends can read them from PC.

Jaiku’s main goal is to bring people closer together by enabling them to share their presence. For us, presence is about everyday things as they happen - what you’re up to, how you’re feeling, where you’re going. We offer a way to connect with the people you care about by sharing presence updates with them on the Web and mobile.

The screenshot below shows the user interface of Jaiku. As you can see my current activity now is “Playing with Jaiku in Canada“. You can also see the status of my friends, for example the mobile diva Darla Mack.

You may ask, what is the difference between blog and Jaiku? In many areas, they are actually the same. Posting your activities to Jaiku is the same as writing a new posting to your blog. Reading your friends’ activities is the same as pulling your friend’s feed. What is the difference then? One difference is the fact that Jaiku is mostly to write small postings. You don’t want to write one blog posting very often to your blog, do you?

First of all, I would like to thank all of you for being readers of S60Tips.com. Since this blog is quite popular, I have received a lot of comment spams.

Last time, I used Akismet from WordPress to filter the spams. It worked quite well. Unfortunately, I used to receive hundred of comment spams. I had to spend time to filter those spams because some good comments are sometimes marked as spams by Akismet. Then I decided to use Captcha so that I don’t need to spend my days filtering out junk comments.

Today, I would like to let you know some rules about comments on S60Tips.com:

  • Please do not ask for registration code, key generator or something that is used to unlock commercial software. I do not distribute any illegal contents on this blog. If you leave a comment asking about those things, I will not approve it. I will delete it immediately.
  • One of my popular postings is Some Useful Secret Codes on Nokia S60 Phones. Some people have been asking about how to unlock their phone. Note that, I do not provide a service to unlock GSM phones. If you leave a comment asking about this, I will also delete it immediately.
  • Before asking any questions in the comment section, please read any previous comments. The answers are sometimes already there. You just need to read all the comments. Normally, I won’t delete such comments because I really appreciate your time.
  • Please leave useful comments only. Do not leave useless comments, such as “it’s good”, “very useful”, etc. I will review these kind of comments case by case. If they are not related to the blog posting or latest comments, then I will simply remove them. If they are related, then I will approve them.

Have you wondered how you can make a phone call without SIM card? Do we really need network operator to make phone call? I have been playing fring on my S60 device in the last couple of days. Amazingly, I can make a phone call without inserting any SIM card to my device. I just use WiFi connection to make a phone call.

How does it happen? What is fring? fring is a third party VoIP application for S60 devices. Here is the quote from fring.com.

fring™ is a mobile application that allows you to make mobile calls and send instant messages (chat) to other fring users and PC-based VoIP services such as Skype, Google Talk and MSN Messenger at no extra cost beyond your existing data plan. fring calls cost nothing extra because they utilize GPRS, 3G and Wi-Fi mobile internet connections.

What you need is only an S60 device with WiFi or 3G support. However, please note that you would need flat-rate data plan if you are using 3G. I always remind you this issue because it is really important. VoIP application uses a lot of bandwidth.

Besides S60 device, you would need Skype account to dial a landline phone or other mobile phone. fring uses the balance of your SkypeOut to make a phone call. That’s why, if you are familiar with Skype, you can assume fring is a kind of “Skype” for S60.

Update (March 14, 2007): Please note that normally you are not always in the WiFi hotspot. That’s why, it’s better to still have your SIM card in the device. Just in case you don’t have access to the hotspot and you got a phone call or want to make a phone call.
