Since I normally use Nokia Nseries, I didn’t know about access points groups feature. I noticed this recently when playing with my Nokia Eseries device. Access Points Groups allows us to group several access points in priority order. When we connect to the Internet, it will first try to use the access point with the highest priority. If it is not available, it will try to use the second highest priority, and so on.
Why is it useful? You can create an Access Point Group that has your WiFi connection as the first priority and your network operator’s data connection as your second priority.
Go to Tools | Settings | Connection | Access point groups menu to create a new access point group.
Then select Options | New group menu. Enter the name you want to give to your access point group in the Group name box. Then, you need to specify which access points and their priority in the Access points box.
Now you can use this access group point as the default connection for your Web browser, for example. This way, you don’t need to change the access point each time you want to switch between WiFi and network operator’s data connection.
The last thing I want to say here is: it would be nice to see this feature on other S60 devices, such as Nokia Nseries.
Compatible devices: Nokia Eseries.

Setting up the access point group works fine on my E61, but the group doesn’t show up as an option for ‘default access point’ in the browser. Did that work for you ?

Just to follow up, according to the user manual for the E61, it seems like this feature is only available to the email client and is used for email roaming (which explains the SMTP server settings in the access point group configuration screen).

@kriegspiel: You are right. I have made the correction to the posting. What I have done in the Web browser application is setting the default access point to “Always ask”. This way, the group will be displayed.

“What I have done in the Web browser application is setting the default access point to “Always ask”. This way, the group will be displayed.”
…which entirely defeats the point. The Groups is a nice idea, but but its not so useful in practice since email is the only thing that supports it. Hopefully they will expand it in the future.

@jay_cee: Exactly. It would be nice to see group support in all applications, including third party applications as well.

You guys should give SmartConnect a try. It accomplishes what the Access Point Group’s suppose to do in the first place.
