As you may know from my previous post, Featured Freeware - DivX Player, I am so excited with DivX player. Now, I would to show you how to convert movies to DivX. The screenshot below shows my personal video that was converted to XviD format and played on DivX Player for S60.
![]()
Let’s start…. What do we need to convert our movies to DivX? We need a converter software. There is a converter software, called DivX Converter, from the official DivX web site. It’s not free, but you can download the trial version from their web site.
Another software, which is a freeware and also my favorite converter, is SUPER. It supports many different input formats, such as MPEG-2, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MOV, 3GP, 3G2, etc. Here is the step to convert your videos to be played on DivX Player for Mobile.
- Download SUPER from their web site.
- Drag and drop your video to SUPER.
- Use the following settings for DivX Player for Mobile.

- Output container: avi
- Output video codec: MPEG-4 (you can also select DivX or XviD)
- Output audio codec: MP3
- Encoder: FFMPEG
- Video
- Video scale size: 320×240
- Aspect: 4:3
- Frame/sec: 15 (you may change to higher frame/sec, e.g. 25, for better video quality)
- Bitrate kbps: 336 (you can use higher bit rate, but the video may skip when played on DivX)
- Audio
- Sampling freq: 22050
- Channels: 2
- Bitrate kbps: 56
- Click Encode (Active Files) button to start encoding. When SUPER asks for FourCC, select XviD.
OK. Now you have your video in DivX format. Transfer it to your phone and enjoy it….
Compatible device: S60 1st, 2nd, 3rd Edition, Nokia Nseries, Nokia Eseries.
Update (12-Jan-2007): The latest version of SUPER (January 4, 2007 build) doesn’t support “Stretch It” option. This causes a problem if we want to convert widescreen videos, e.g. 16:9. The problem has been identified by SUPER’s developers. They said that they will re-introduce this feature in their next build. I am currently trying to contact the developer asking download link for the old version of SUPER that still supports “Stretch It” option. I will keep you updated.
Update (12-April-2007): eRightSoft has released a new version of SUPER that supports “Stretch It” option again. Make sure to uncheck this option when you are converting widescreen videos.
Update (02-May-2007): There is a nice article from SoftwareInReview.com, Improving Video Quality on the Nokia E61 Smartphones.

Nice post. You reminded me that I purchased Divx Pro some time ago and I downloaded/reinstalled it just now. Converting a 700Mb Divx to HANDHELD-divx takes a looooong time; I think I will try your way.
October 1st, 2006 at 9:37 pm
@Daniel: I like DivX Pro too honestly. We can just simply select “Home Theatre”, “Handheld”, etc. No need to specify complicated settings, such as video resolution, video bitrate, audio sampling rate, etc.

Another good Free software for conversion is Super Encoder

@Abdul: Thanks for your comment. I agree that SUPER is another good converter software. In fact, I have mentioned also above that some other bloggers even prefer this software…

Hello Guys
Just dled the MediaCoder and the divxplayer. I got an N70. But what I can’t find is how to get it in fullscreen landscape mode. I always have those black bars on screen of my phone. Only when I keep it in portrait mode it is full screen. I already choose for the 90 degrees CW but it doesn’t changes anything.
An other question, I can’t add subtitles. I go to the tab Text and below subtitling but I can only choose the language and “subtitle file” is grayed out.
maybe some advice, Thx

HI, when I try to install the DivX Player on my E61 it complains about the certificate and I cannot install the DivX Player .sisx File. What’s the trick ?
Maybe somebody could help me. TIA
Stefan
November 15th, 2006 at 9:33 am
@Stefan: DivX is signed using self-signed certificate. To install it in Nokia E-Series, including E61, you need to enabled self-signed certificate. Please read my posting here, http://www.s60tips.com/2006/05/25/installing-self-signed-applications-in-s60-3rd-edition/
I have tried DivX in E61 and it works nice.

give me converter
December 18th, 2006 at 6:51 pm
The converter can be downloaded from http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/download.htm.
Alternatively, you can also download SUPER, another cool converter, from http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html.

i want to download divx player
January 1st, 2007 at 6:18 pm
@khaled: You can download DivX Player for Mobile from http://mobile.divx.com. However, note that the current version of DivX Player has been expired (read also my other posting here, http://www.s60tips.com/2007/01/01/divx-player-for-mobile-is-expired/)
January 6th, 2007 at 8:26 pm
Hi, is the Media Coder/SUPER capable to pick up the subtitle of a movie (DVD) ?
I only knew that DVDx capable to do that…
January 11th, 2007 at 7:49 am
Hi, Antony!
I have an 6680. When I convert using the settings above it works fine if the material, that should be encoded, is fullscreen but if it’s letterboxed the picture seems to be a little streched out. What am I doing wrong?
January 12th, 2007 at 6:41 pm
@Jonas: This is a problem in the latest SUPER build. This is because they have removed “Stretch it” option in the latest build.
The developers have noticed this problem. They have promised to release a new version with “Stretch it” option as soon as possible (http://www.erightsoft.com/Supforum.html).

hi there

but the problem is that the output volume(sound) is very low even after increasing the adjust output volume option to 300 n raising the divx volume bar
any suggestions?ive been lookin everywhere
help me
thx
March 16th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
Hi dr. Moe,
Sorry if this is obvious (it took a long while for me to notice), but did you know that with the joystick up/down while playing the movie in the mobile divx player you can raise/lower the volume? At least in my E62 it solved the low volume problem.
March 16th, 2007 at 7:37 pm
BTW, I saw an article in this site showing how to convert with ffmpeg, for the realplayer. For the free DivX player, here\’s the command line I use with ffmpeg in linux for my Nokia E62:
ffmpeg -i -r 15 -s 320×240 -sameq -ar 11025 -ab 56 -ac 1 -acodec mp3 -vcodec mpeg4 -bf 2 -f avi -vtag DIVX -bufsize 65535
You can replace -sameq with -b XXX, where XXX is the video bitrate, to reduce the file (and quality).
I even got good results removing -r 15 and converting a 25fps movie.
ffmeg can do a lot; it took me sometime to manage to use its output with the mobile DivX player (0.86), because I didn\’t know the -vtag option (without this, the tag is FMP4 which the player dislikes). Hated to boot Windows just to use SUPER.
March 16th, 2007 at 7:40 pm
aargh, it ate away the stuff between “greater than” and “less than”!
Here’s the command again:
ffmpeg -i IN_VIDEO_FILE.xxx -r 15 -s 320×240 -sameq -ar 11025 -ab 56 -ac 1 -acodec mp3 -vcodec mpeg4 -bf 2 -f avi -vtag DIVX -bufsize 65535 OUTFILE.avi
March 18th, 2007 at 12:19 pm
For those who don\’t like the command line interface of ffmpeg can still use the great Linux/Windows/Mac video editor avidemux at http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/index.html - use ffmpeg mpeg4, lame audio at 56kbps cbr, audio filter: resample to 22050 kHz - if you want to encode 16:9 or letterbox, you will appreciate the good selection of video filters to play with the sizing (f.e. 16:9: resize to 320×140px², add 50px each top and bottom and you got a nice fitting video without skew). Usual dvd movies encode to est. 250MB avi files - great for those who have a 2GB miniSD card.
Greetings, Alex

BIG THX finally a solution to get small stutter free video files with great quality.
I noticed that its best to keep the same fps as your original file so for a NTSC file keep it to 23.98 and not 15 fps.
At least this works great on newer Nokia phones
April 17th, 2007 at 10:18 pm
Can\’t download super. Looks like there is no link for the actual file after I click on the download. I don\’t have a popup blocker to kill the download. Something wrong with the link!

@Raul: You can visit this page, http://www.erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html. There are some direct download links there. It’s a bit confusing because a lot of advertisement.

I’ve installed Divx to my Nokia 6120, made a video file, sent it over to my phone (its in the inbox), but it doesn’t open when I click it.
I can’t find how to navigate to it through Divx, but supposedly this is possible; am I missing a button somewhere?
Otherwhy’s, is there a file root I can dump it in so Divx player will see it?
Thanks!
September 14th, 2007 at 6:19 am
@Tom: You have to copy it to your \Videos folder. It can be copied using PC Suite.
September 14th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Hi what ressolution should i use for my N95 landscape view, to play them in that view and the sound not to be left behind or something to work smoothly.
Thank You!
September 14th, 2007 at 8:38 pm
@Stickman: Actually QVGA should be okay for N95. The thing is that the current DivX version has a bug. The sound is sometimes lagging. You can check my posting that discusses this issue, http://www.s60tips.com/2006/12/06/divx-player-or-realplayer/
September 14th, 2007 at 9:10 pm
@Tom: You have to copy the videos to your memory card (e:\videos).

Thanks Antony!

Hey! Your recommendation SUPER software is gathering information from my computer! What the hell is this?
September 18th, 2007 at 6:15 pm
@Bartman: Sorry, I didn’t know that. I’ll investigate this issue and come back asap.
September 18th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
@Bartman: If the issue you described the same as what is being discussed on this discussion, http://www.w3exchange.com/t147-superexe-trying-to-launch-regsvr32exe-and.html?

I have the current release of SUPER - but I cannot seem to convert FROM divx and output to another file?? I run SUPER, then right click to ‘add’ the media to convert and it can’t see any of my divx files..
I have a lot of divx movies, but they stutter badly when played on my e61i via divx player for mobile.. any ideas?
I tried mediacoder but I get a lot of errors..
September 22nd, 2007 at 11:07 pm
@umbalito: You have to drag and drop the file name to SUPER window.
September 23rd, 2007 at 9:15 am
Hey Antony,
Tried that too, but nothing happens. In fact, when I mouse over the area where you are supposed to drop the file, it shows the supported input files > and divx isn’t one of them?
I guess it can’t convert ‘from’ divx?
All I’m trying to do is to actually convert my divx movies to another avi or to encode them to a lower bitrate to minimize ghosting and audio sync issue when playing?
Thanks, awesome site by the way

PLEASE TELL ME IF I AM MISSING SOMETHING HERE?
BUT THIS SOFTWARE APPEARS TO BE MISSING THE MOST IMPORTANT FUNCTION……PZ HELP…WERE IS THE ENCODE BUTTON?
October 12th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
There should be a button called “Encode (Active files)”. It is located at the bottom of the window.
October 13th, 2007 at 2:43 am
hi antony but there is no such button…is there another place to download this programme as the one above that you told me to go to does not have that button

October 13th, 2007 at 9:24 am
hi anthony,
you said before that, in order to watch the converted files on the mobile (nokia 6120), we have to transfer it to the video folder. now after i do that, what next? i still can’t find it anywhere in the cellphone.
thanks for any help!
October 13th, 2007 at 5:38 pm
@NEIL: There is another application called MediaCoder (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/). It is an open source project and support many codecs as well.
October 13th, 2007 at 5:40 pm
@sarah: Do you use DivX for Mobile application to play the video (http://www.s60tips.com/2006/09/29/featured-freeware-divx-player-for-s60/)? If you use RealPlayer, it won’t show up.
October 14th, 2007 at 4:09 am
I’m using the divx converter to convert the files, if that’s what you mean…
Real player is installed on my cellphone (built in), so it made sense
October 14th, 2007 at 6:37 am
I think I understand what you’re saying. I’ve tries installing the divx for mobile(I had to install microsft activesunc) , but it doesn’t recognize my phone, or somthing similar. “not designed to be used on mobile on your mobile device” is the exact terms (one of them, at least).
To sum things up, I am at a complete loss…
October 14th, 2007 at 10:14 am
I see. I think I understand your problem too. You need Nokia PC Suite to connect your device (and not ActiveSync). Please download Nokia PC Suite from http://europe.nokia.com/A4144903
October 14th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
I’ve already got Nokia PC Suite, and it recognizes the the device with no problems. But to install the divx for mobile, it said I needed the ActiveSync, and the ActiveSync is the one who doesn’t recognize any phones connected.
Did I explain that well?
October 14th, 2007 at 1:40 pm
You shouldn’t need ActiveSync to install an application. Can you use “Application Installer” from Nokia PC Suite. You can run it from PC Suite’s main application.
October 16th, 2007 at 12:08 pm
Doesn’t work either.. The “Application Installer” doesn’t recognize the Divx “SetupSmartPhone”
December 4th, 2007 at 2:50 am
Hey, Thanks for sharing da best settings buddy… whenever I tried 2 convert file, either it size goes to large or the qualiy becomes 2 bad.. These are the best moderate settings….. But I would advise all of u to use CorePlayer instead of DivX\’s own one bcuz it can run .MPEG files (also 3gp, mp4, avi) with framerate upto 30fps n resolution upto 640×480 (very slow at high res)……..
December 17th, 2007 at 5:27 am
HI, when I try to install the DivX Player on my N72 it complains about the certificate and I cannot install the DivX Player .sisx File.
December 17th, 2007 at 7:49 am
@Selvin: Note that N72 is an S60 2nd Edition phone. You cannot download DivX for S60 3rd for N72 because they are not compatible.
December 28th, 2007 at 6:38 pm
There is a free download manager. (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/). You can use this application to download the videos from Youtube.
Also this Download manager can convert the youtube videos to many different formats (mpeg(1/2/4), xvid, wmv …). Also you can change the resolution while converting so that it will fit the target phones resolution.
Enjoy.

December 30th, 2007 at 11:47 am
@Lars: You can also right click on Super window to open the menu.

March 14th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Hi Antony, I have a Nokia 6120 and have downloaded SUPER and have converted a cpl files. after seeing the above posts i have moved the converted files to my video folder (e/ folder) via the nokia pc suite but how do i then play them on my phone? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
April 17th, 2008 at 1:12 am
thanks gays\’ i was looking for this program for a long time
May 18th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Yes SUPERS does the job great however it takes a long time to convert full movie. Here is a site where you may download Video Previews ready for the mobile - 2-3 minutes episodes taken from the movie: www.zml.com. They represent actual video quality of the movie and are not just a trailer. Chose an iPod download version on the site to preview for example on N95. If your source is internet downloads, you could save much time if you are not sure you will like the chosen movie.
Cheers,
