What would you do if your mobile phone is stolen? Many people may have no idea what to do. The most important is actually contact our operator to block our SIM card. You don’t want the thief to use your SIM card to make international call, do you?

After that, what could we do? Basically nothing… Smart thief usually replaces our SIM card with his so that we cannot track their location.

Is a better way to protect our mobile phone? The answer is yes. An independent developer from Italy, Marco Bellino, has developed a freeware called Guardian. It is able to help us track where the thief is. Currently Guardian is available for S60 2nd Edition phones only. Hope that the author will release a version for S60 3rd Edition phones soon.

What does Guardian do? It basically authenticate the inserted SIM card each time we switch on our mobile phones. If the authentication fails, Guardian sends a SMS to a predefined phone number.

The screenshot below shows the message that is sent from Guardian.

SMS from Guardian

As you can see above, we get some important information from the thief, including phone number, IMSI, location and operator.

The cool thing about Guardian is its capability to hide itself when invalid SIM card is inserted. It means the thief will not notice there is Guardian application in the phone. Furthermore, he can’t see Guardian in the Application Manager either. Don’t forget that Guardian will send SMS silently too.
