Update (10-Jan-2007): There is an update of DivX Player for Mobile that has fixed all of the problems below. Please check my latest posting, New DivX Player for Mobile.. ![]()
Since I posted a blog about DivX Player for Mobile about two months ago, I have converted many videos/movies to DivX Player. Unfortunately, the result was not as I have expected. There are so many problems with the current version of DivX Player, i.e. version 0.83. This version seems to be very buggy. At the end, I decided not to use the current version of DivX Player and wait for the final version.
What are my problems with the current version of DivX Player?
- Audio synchronization. This is the most annoying problem. I have tried to use different codecs, DivX and XviD, as well as different encoder, FFMPEG and MEncoder, but no luck. The video can be played properly on the PC, but when it is played on S60 phone, the audio is not synchronized properly.
- Decoder problem. Some frames from certain videos sometimes are not decoded properly in DivX Player. As a result, we can see defect frames for a couple of seconds. The same video can be played without problems on the PC.
- Wrong video length. When converting video using FFMPEG encoder, DivX Player cannot retrieve the video length properly. For example, 4 minutes video can be reported as 10 minutes video.
So, which video player am I using now? Currently, I am using RealPlayer, the built-in video player in most S60 phones. Although the user interface is not as nice as DivX Player, Real Player doesn’t have all the problems above.
Do you have the same problems with DivX Player? Do you have solutions to those problems?
Compatible devices: S60 2nd, 3rd Edition, Nokia Nseries, Nokia Eseries.
Update (01-Jan-2007): You can convert your videos to be played on RealPlayer using third party applications, such as SUPER. Please read also my other posting, Converting Your Videos to RealPlayer.

By analyzing the two demo videos provided using Gspot, the settings used show large differences from your prescribed settings.
Demo1 uses 22KHz MP3 mono audio @ 24kbps CBR, and a 208×114 pixels DivX6 video that is 176 kbps @ 15 fps.
Demo2 has no audio, the video is a 208×156 pixels 35 kbps DivX4 @ 12.5fps.
Both demoes were created with the SmartMovie Converter.
Try the above settings with your encoder as a starting base.

Tip: when using SUPER to convert video, H.263 video renders a brighter picture than MPEG, and the 3GP container results in better seekable files than MP4 containers. Also, if you find sound to be too low, disable using DirectX in the options.

@Bassam: Thanks for your excellent tips…

I don’t really see the point in using DivX right now. The quality of encoded 3gp files using Super is far superior.
For one thing, on my N80 and E70 the Divx movies stutters (as too much for the phone cpu to handle) a LOT with he same quality setting as if were to encode in in 3gp. Its smooth sailing with the movie converted to 3gp (mpeg4@384kbps/29.97fps, AAC 22khz/64kbps)
If someone can post me an already endcoded divx file that would change my mind on this matter please do.

@Hola: I think we should wait for the final version of DivX Player. The current version is still the beta version, so it may contain some bugs. I do hope that the final version will be more stable and more optimized.

Hey, yea I think so too. Sorry for double posting in your other post (which u can delete if u want). I thought I should make it clear to every1 that divx isn’t as good on symbian as it’s on the PC (yet). I love divx I hope it matures to be THE video codec on SymbianOS as It’s on the PPC (with TCMP).
I remember someone posting about how superior Divx is compared to 3gp on symbian, and I just don’t see how. I’m not sure if it’s here or another blog. Well he’s bound to come here as this is a very useful and popular site

@Victor: Note that RealPlayer cannot play videos in .avi container. It can play .3gp, 3g2, .mp4, etc.

Hi
I just got my N73me but this one thing annoys me… it’s that with realplayer you cannot rewind (or am I so stupid that I cannot find the button? =D ) Is there some solution to this?
January 6th, 2007 at 9:49 am
@Dremel: I am not sure about Nokia 73ME. However for “standard” N73, you can use left key to rewind the video.
January 6th, 2007 at 3:36 pm
Well I tried every button on my celly but nothing worked. I even used the wind up button of the AD-41 device but it did nothing. This really bugs me but no can do :/
I’m not sure what you meant by “left key” but joystick didn’t do the trick.
(originally i meant to say “wind up”, not rewind)

Agh…. I’m so stupid (after all it was me who didn’t “do the trick”
) Well the so called “problem” is already solved =DD

@Dremel: Good to know that you have solved the problem…

I downloaded DivX 0.90 for the Nokia N95 8GB, mostly because a lot of my video files are in the .avi format and I don\’t like having to convert files. I have 2 problems (using DivX):
1. When I play the videos via the TV it does not display in full screen as does RealPlayer
(1 OF MORE)
July 10th, 2008 at 5:04 am
(2 OF MORE)
2. After about five 10 minutes play the video and sound start becoming jerky. I then rewind the video slightly & Play
July 10th, 2008 at 5:07 am
(3 OF ALL)
Does anyone know if the above problems be fixed or ideally if I can get DivX codecs for the RealPlayer? the avi video files are approximately 700MB
