I have read so many questions how to unlock password-protected memory card. This happens very frequently to some of us (including me). Usually for security reasons, we protect our memory cards with password. It can be done from Memory Card application by selecting Options | Set password menu.
For S60 1st and 2nd Phones
What should we do if we forget the password? For S60 1st and some of 2nd phones, such as Nokia 3650, Nokia 6600 and Nokia N-Gage, the password is stored in a plain text file.
- Firstly, you need to install FExplorer, a free file manager that allows us to browser through S60 file system.
- Next, launch FExplorer and then browser to c:\system folder. There is a file, called mmcstore.
- Rename the file to mmcstore.txt and then open it. Your password must be several characters at the end of the file.
For S60 3rd Phones, Nokia N-Series and Nokia E-Series
Unfortunately, there is no way to recover the password in the latest S60 phones. The only way that I know so far is by reformatting the memory card. It can be done from Memory Card application by selecting Options | Format memory card menu. Of course, you will lose all your data in the memory card…
If any of you have experience unlocking password of memory card in latest S60 phones, feel free to share it here.
Compatible devices: S60 1st, 2nd, 3rd Edition, Nokia Nseries, Nokia Eseries.
Update (27-Mar-07): I have written another posting about password-protected memory card on Another Tip for Password-protected Memory Card. This mostly applies to Nokia Eseries.

can’t format and of course forgot pass, what can i do??
December 21st, 2006 at 9:15 pm
@Luis: Which phone are you using? If it’s not possible to format and you forgot the password, I don’t think we can much with your memory card. Sorry about that.

My problem with password for miniSD memory card was a bit different - I took out card from my phone (it was without password) and put it in other Nokia phone. And it asked me for password! Afterwards, when I returned my card to my phone, it was password protected, but I had no clue what was the password! So, I tried all possible versions - phone lock code, remote lock code, pin, pin2, puk, etc. Nothing helped. Then I turned for help to Internet. Found your post and did as you suggested - formated memory card in my Nokia E61. But it still had a password! I read in one post, that if one wants to use remote lock option, memory card should be password protected. So, I thought that maybe memory card and remote lock is somehow connected. That is why I tried my remote lock code for memory card again. And it worked!
Maybe my solution will help somebody!

@Zahorijs: Thank you for very much for adding this valuable information.
December 22nd, 2006 at 6:58 pm
P.S. I noticed one more interesting thing about Nokia E61 - if you would like to change the password, it will allways tell you that password you typed is incorrect. Only “remove password” option works.

I set a password on my memory card and i forget it my mobile is N93 it works on my mobile but when i tried to use it in another one i couldnt acess it wht can i do
December 27th, 2006 at 4:41 pm
@noha: Can you remove password from your mobile? If yes, then just remove it from your mobile. If not possible, my suggestion is backup the contents of your memory card to the PC and then reformat your memory card.

@Samir: Yes, I think the solution above does not apply for non-S60 phones, e.g. 6230i.

I bought my phone Nokia N93 with memory card from a guy that is now not reachable, the other day phone turned off and after i recharged battery and turned it on, memory card requested password, i have videos and photos from my recent trip stored there so i dont want to format the card but is there any way to reach my files on the card? Any program that can unlock the code maybe? Please help me, i really dont want to loose my files!
January 29th, 2007 at 9:27 pm
@mayre: Unfortunately, it won’t be possible to recover the password on N93. Even if you insert it to your PC, you won’t be able to read it. I don’t see any other solutions other than formatting your memory card. Sorry about this.

hi.. can some 1 help. I Have a N93 and recently brought it to NOKIA shop to upgrade software. THey said that when upgrade software, all data will be gone & advise me to transfer files, videos, photos, contacts etc.. into mini SD card.
After upgrade software, when I on the mobile, it asked for password for my mini SD card.
NOKIA people said I set the password when i bought the mobile.
BUT I NEVER SET any password. I did not even Know that a password could even be set for the memory card.
Now i am stuck. All my data / info are in the mini SD card, ‘protected’ by a password that I never even set.
Any one can help ? Appreciate it.

Hi Anthony!
I have a Nokia 6280 that came with a memory card. I used it for a while and then suddenly one day the phone required a password in order for me to enter it. I have no idea what that password could be, as I had never entered one. I have tried all possible options but nothing seems to work. I can\’t even access it from my computer, it\’s like it doesnt exist anymore. I can\’t even format it because that requires the password as well. Do you have any idea what the problem could be?
February 13th, 2007 at 6:13 pm
@Ina: If your card is password-protected, it won’t appear on your PC. Unfortunately, I have no idea what is going on there. It could be that the card is protected with default password (1234, 0000, …)? Is there something in the documentation?

@tyler: Interesting. You may want to check my other posting here, http://www.s60tips.com/2007/03/03/another-tip-for-password-protected-memory-card/

Hello !
I have a nokia 6280. My mini sd card worked perfectly until today. I never had a password on it or anything else. But now I can’t access my files because it says that the memory card is not formatted. I did format it when I bought it a couple of months ago. I have some pictures that I need and alot of other things. How Do I get to my files ? Also my nokia phone manager does not find my memory card.
March 31st, 2007 at 9:25 am
@Karemzo: It looks your memory card is corrupted. Have you tried to use USB memory card reader? Not sure if PC can still read your card, but it’s worth trying it.
March 31st, 2007 at 10:24 am
I don’t have one ;/
There must be some other thing you could do
March 31st, 2007 at 10:26 am
But also, when I press format, It asks me if I want to delete all the data that the memory contains. ;/

Hi, i reverted back to factory settings as manufactured on my Nokia 6280 and the dumbest thing I did was I forgot to take out the memory card. the phone was branded to 3 and still is but has enabled the push to talk function; however, my memory card contains very valuable information and now it is asking for a password which I have never set. Has anybody any solution as yet? I also can’t format it from the phone or do anything to it, neither will Nokia PC Suite pick it up??
April 3rd, 2007 at 6:39 am

April 20th, 2007 at 3:13 am
Hi,
(Sorry for my english)
To unlock a Mmc who is protected via a password , try to buy a MMC card reader or a multiformat memory card reader.
First , insert de card on the reader . Some readers can’t read card who are protected by a password so you must try other reader if it doesn’t work.
Second is to perform a format of the memory card with windows utility (right click on the memory card reader and choose “Format”) . On the windows format menu , choose a fast format of the card and start .
Third is to download a software who can “rescue” the data on the card who was lost when you make a format on . Eg : Mediarescue pro , virtual lab data recovery (If you can’t find , search a lost data software recovery on Google) .
Use the software to rescue the lost data on the card (The software are very simple to use) .
That’s all !!!
Good Luck

Hi,
the story started when my girlfriend\\\’s phone, nokia 6280, was having serious software problems, we were told by t-mobile (her service provider (not on of my fav\\\’s:P)) that there was a local nokiashop in northamtpon that would be able to help fix her phone, we went in and it would take an hour to update the software, which was fair enough, we left everything to do with the phone with the guy, hour later, when we came back everything was working fine…. but not the memory card, it had decided to have a PASSWORD put on it, there was no password on it before going in, i checked myself, i want to know why there was a password put on it, because the nokia guy, who wished the desk was a little longer than my arm length, insisted that my girlfriend was lying, and has put a password on it, this made me angry because she was very upset. I have rung up nokia, and they put the pone down on me, to put it nicely, im not a very happy bunny, does anyone have any idea what i can do? i need to get hold of someone who can sort this out, very important images and documents were held on the phone, that need to be obtained.
Any help toward the matter would be greatly appreciated.
piece of software, or core passwords needed

@deo: Note that mmcstore is only available on some older phones. Some newer phones do not store mmcstore any more.

i also have the same problem on my n70.
left my phone into the nokia service point for a repair to the screen. came back formatted and when i put in the memory card it asked for a password. asked nokia and they said they had come across this before but had no solution. my service provider (vodafone) said it must be one of the common pass words ie 0000 or 12345. neither worked or my sim pin.
fexplorer will not work on my phone.
i dont want to format the card as it contains alot of data and software. any help would be great..

Sorry, I have to close the comment. If your memory card is suddenly password-protected, try the tip above. Alternatively, check also my other posting here, http://www.s60tips.com/2007/03/03/another-tip-for-password-protected-memory-card/
