Quite some time ago, I wrote a posting about setting up GMail account in our S60 phones. Recently, Google has released an email client for mobile phone called GMail Application for Mobile. It is a Java-based application and it runs on many mobile phones (not only S60 phones).
What can we do with GMail Application for Mobile? Basically most features of web-based are available here, including write email, search email and even report spam.
Point your S60 browser to http://www.gmail.com/app to download GMail Application
Since it is a Java-based application, the start-up is a little bit slow (compared to native applications). It also consumes relatively high amount of memory.
Compatible devices: S60 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Nokia N-Series, Nokia E-Series.

I have no comment about new gmail mobile because it`s great and it functions smooth. But one thing misses:
If I have more than one mail besides gmail I must install two or three programs to watch, send… At the moment my favorite program is Movamail http://movamail.com/ because you can use multiple accounts (gmail, yahoo mail, hotmail, aol…) and it supports POP, IMAP and Webmail and I think it will overcome great Gmail just because it’s versatile.

@Vladimir: I am not really sure if this application compatible with Siemens SX1. My assumption was yes because SX1 supports MIDP 2.0. However, it seems you’re saying it is not compatible.

@HuLsH: I agree with you. That’s why I myself would still prefer default Messaging application from GMail application for Mobile.

Is it possible to get rid of those annoying questions every time I launch GMail application on my N70?
It asks will I allow this software to connect to use network and which access point to use.
I found GMail (158kB) in N70’s application manager and there I put to the network access ask first time. It still keeps asking every time I launch GMail.

@Silver Dude: I don’t think you can get dir of those questions because GMail app is written in Java. There is always a question like that because Java runtime is running in a sandbox.

Thank you for your answer Anthony. Too bad though. It’s a bit annoying to answer every time those same questions

The only default to this application, it’s the startup time (5 seconds for my E51) and the obligation to answer few question before reading emails (”do you accept to connect ?” and choose your network).
It’s too long.

Hi, I have been trying to install the GMail application on my N95 8GB, I download it from the official page(http://www.gmail.com/app) using my phone´s web browser, but when I start the installation process I revive the following warning message:
Application is Untrusted and may be Harmful to your phone…
Then I click on view details, and I received the following message;
When you install an application the security of the application is checked during the installation. Your device can not verify the supplier of the application unless it has a digital signature or Certificate. Continue installation only if you are sure of the origin and contents of the application.
Well, since I am downloading it from the official Google site, then I think it is a trustable application, but I aborted the installation since it can not verify neither a digital signature or its certificate…
Is the Gmail Mobile application not signed by Google?
Have any of you had the same problem? Ant tips? Thanks. Tom

@Tom: You are right. GMail app is not signed by Google. I don’t know why they don’t sign it. It should be safe to install it from the official Google web site.

It is safe to download and install so you don\’t have to worry, Tom.
Silver Dude, I got rid of those in the App Manager, if I remember correctly. I use G-Mail through Messaging now so I\’m not all that sure.

On my Nokia 6650, I can download, install and start the app.
BUT, I cannot enter my username/password.
Keys beep, but nothing happens?!
Any ideas?

@BRay,
Hit the 5 key, that will bring up a dialog where you can enter your information.
It works on my 6650, as long as I keep telling it that I want to allow it to access the net.

Hi. I have E71, NOKIA. I was trying to download the application by going to the website: http://www.gmail.com/app. Unfortunately it is telling me my mobile does not support.

Vitorio, it is funny, I had the gmail app installed on my e71 for almost a year and it worked great. I recently had to hard reset the phone, and lost the app, when I went to download it again I get the unsupported message….they must have changed something..
