Long time ago, I have compiled a list of Ten Must-Have S60 Freeware Applications. It was mainly dedicated for S60 2nd Edition phones. Now, I have compiled the new list for S60 3rd Edition. I will be updating this list from time to time.
Before going to the list, freeware here means an application that can be used without paying money to the developers. It includes donationware and open source, but it does not include crippleware and trialware.
Here is the list of Ten Must-Have S60 3rd Freeware Applications (in alphabetical order):
1. EQO - Integrated messaging application that supports Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger. GTalk, ICQ. The most interesting feature might be Skype support!
2. Google Maps for Mobile - You have maps of the whole world in your pocket. You can even query places, such as restaurant, shops, etc.
3. MobiReader - A free e-book reader. It can be used as Bible reader too (read my other posting, Reading Bible on S60 Phone). You can also subscribe news from many sources, such as CNN and Business Week.

4. OggPlay - Nice music player that supports MP3, AAC and MP4, it’s better than the built-in S60 music player in some areas.
5. Podcasting - If you are subscribers of audio blogging, this application is definitely must-have for you.
6. Screenshot - This one is the application that I develop myself to capture screenshots. All screenshots in this blog are captured using this application.
7. Shozu - Upload your photos and videos quickly to the online blog services, such as Flickr.
8. STris-2 - A clone of the popular Tetris game.
9. Y-Browser - File explorer is a must-have application for advanced users. Y-Browser is one of the best file explorer for S60 3rd.
![]()
10. Widsets - A collection of mini applications, called widgets, that allows us to subscribe feed (RSS/Atom) from many different topics.
Compatible devices: S60 3rd Edition, Nokia Nseries, Nokia Eseries
Update (05-Oct-06): Added Y-Browser as file explorer together with SysExplorer.
Update (06-Oct-06): Added screenshots.
Update (01-Jan-07): Removed DivX Player for Mobile and add MobiReader.
Update (23-Jan-07): Removed mig33 and added EQO.
Update (10-Mar-07): Removed SysExplorer from the list.

> SysExplorer - File explorer is a must-have application for advanced users.
Why not Y-Browser? Try it and you will like it. It’s far much more usable than SysExplorer.
October 5th, 2006 at 10:54 pm
Honestly I use both Y-Browser and SysExplorer. I like both of them…
The reason why I put SysExplorer because it has a feature to display Hardware Information.
Anyway, I will update the list and put Y-Browser and SysExplorer.

@Alessandro: I agree with you. Actually I am about to write about Flash Lite in my next posting. At the moment, I would like to seperate Flash Lite from native/Java applications.

could you please tell me where you got that cool skin from ? lol

@mpsm: Do you mean the theme that I am using? It is actually the theme from S60 team. You can download it from here, http://blogs.s60.com/tommi/2006/09/exclusive_download_the_new_tur.html.

I don’t really see the point in using DivX right now. The quality of encoded 3gp files using Super is far superior.
For one thing, on my N80 and E70 the Divx movies stutters (as too much for the phone cpu to handle) a LOT with he same quality setting as if were to encode in in 3gp. Its smooth sailing with the movie converted to 3gp (mpeg4@384kbps/29.97fps, AAC 22khz/64kbps)
If someone can post me an already endcoded divx file that would change my mind on this matter please do.

Something worth mentioning - One thing working to Y-Browser\\\’s favor is the ability as of build 0.77 to support plugins. Existing plugins are a ZIP utility, TEXTViewer, and Mailfolder access, and surely more to come.
January 3rd, 2007 at 8:23 pm
@EchoZulu: Thanks for the clarifications. I think the plug-in is a very nice feature for Y-Browser.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:12 pm
Divx is only for .avi files. I\\\’ve install it on my N73.

Thanks for the list. I have compiled Symbian native (meaning no Java/MIDP) freeware applications for Series 60 at http://tinyhack.com/freewarelist/s603rd/.

What abaout a simple timer Application? Does anyone know about one? I think it\’s a shame there is nothing like that on my N73 by default.
March 6th, 2007 at 10:42 pm
Yeah, I’m missing the timer function of my old nokia phones.

March 22nd, 2007 at 8:29 am

N73 ME! kid!:
DIY theme for S60 3rd edition based phones is actually not a freeware, therefore inclusion in the list is unethical.. As much as I want it to be in Antony\’s list [by requesting]. BTW, I have the DIY theme installation file.
Thanks for the screenshot Anthony! =)

@viperkid: Yes, I agree. This list contains only freeware and open source projects. It doesn’t list crippleware or demo.

I just discovered this site and i\’ve been purchasing NOKIA products since 1988. I read each reply and obtained info that is very helpful, thank you all, Especially ANTHONY PRANATA. When you buy NOKIA products from service providers they erase some of the features from the device to compel you to buy applications either from them(The Service Provider) or second & third party sites. THANKS for helping make FREEWARE available.
May 9th, 2007 at 2:55 am
Reply for RENE S60.com has freeware for s60 2nd edition and 3rd edition devices. You’ll find your timer there or try ALLABOUTSYMBIAN.

October 27th, 2007 at 7:56 am
What N73 ME! kid! could use is Carbide.ui by Nokia (http://www.forum.nokia.com/info/sw.nokia.com/id/bb173537-4e67-496f-9967-50917d5cfc47/S60_Theme_Studio_for_Symbian_OS.html). It is free and written by Nokia for the development of Themes on the S60 platform. There are even video tutorials for it.
Good luck.

Need some freeware for nokia N73m
November 8th, 2007 at 1:57 am
i think an alarm application that offers multiple recurring alarms should be on this top ten list. on my P910i i could set up to three everyday / work days / once off alarms. this was a standard feature. the lack of alarm flexibility on my E61i is horrid!
November 8th, 2007 at 7:30 am
@zedwunare: Thanks for the input. The recurring alarm is already included on some S60 devices, e.g. Nokia N95. However, you are right, it is not on E61i.
November 13th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
thanks for the reply Antony. i realise it’s already included on some phones but it really is an invaluable tool for the many people that use their phones as an alarm. i found this http://www.drjukka.com/YAlarms.html which seems only to be available from a single source and you also have to allow any security certificates in order to install it, but it works well.
thanks for the list though - it really is great! certainly going to try some of these!
January 10th, 2008 at 10:56 am
i want suncompass for E50.(NOKIA)
January 13th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
This list must be from the stone ages. Y-Browser has since been surpassed by ActiveFile.
Why EQO that might do Skype in some distant future when fring already does Skype?
A tetris clone as a top 10 must have application? You must be joking! cCam, Opera Mini, there are plenty of apps which would fit way better in a must-have top 10.
January 13th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
@666: You are right. The list is out-dated. If you check the last updated date, it’s almost 1 year ago.
