Firstly spotted by Techmundo 2.0 a couple of days ago, DivX Player is probably the coolest free video player for S60 phones. For you who don’t know DivX, here is the description from Wikipedia web site:
DivX is a video codec created by DivX, Inc. (formerly DivXNetworks, Inc.), which has become popular due to its ability to compress lengthy video segments into small sizes while maintaining relatively high visual quality. DivX uses lossy MPEG-4 Part 2 compression, where quality is balanced against file size for utility.
I have tried DivX player and I think I would make it as my primary video player for S60 (replacing SmartMovie). I will discuss how to convert videos to DivX in my next posting. Meanwhile, you can download the players and enjoy some cool movie trailers from the link at the end of this posting.
Click here to download DivX Player for S60
Bonus Links:

DivX.com - the official web site of DivX.
Compatible devices: S60 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Nokia N-Series, Nokia E-Series.
Update (31-Dec-06): It seems the current version of DivX Player for Mobile still has some bugs, for example audio synchronization. Please read my other posting here, DivX Player or RealPlayer? Hope that this bug will be fixed in the next release of DivX Player for Mobile. I will keep this posting updated.
Update (10-Jan-07): The updated version of DivX Player for Mobile has been released. This version is not expired on January 1, 2007 any more.
Update (15-Apr-07): Please continue further discussion about DivX Player on Forum.S60Tips.com.

Looks like the DivX Player is the SmartMovie that was bought and customized by DivX, Inc. See the options, help text, font used, and control interfaces… that’s really similar, don’t you think so?
And that means we can enjoy SmartMovie for free legally!
September 29th, 2006 at 7:05 pm
@yuku: I have the same feeling too. There are two possibilities. The first one is as you mentioned. However, I don’t see the points why they’re doing it. Lonely Cat Games is doing very well with their SmartMovie. Why DivX bought it and then give it for free? Where does the money come from?
Second possibility, they just imitate SmartMovie user interface…

I’m having issues with Mobile Divx. Apparently I get no sound and very low framerate when watching 700Mb avi’s. But converting from 700Mb to a 363 3gp file gives almost perfect image, framerate and sound using Realplayer as movieplayer.
Anyone know how to fix divx so I can use it?
September 30th, 2006 at 9:24 am
@Daniel: What is the resolution of your video? I have similar experience when using VGA (640 x 480). The audio can still be played, but the video skips. However, when I downgrade it to QVGA (320 x 240), the video can be played smoothly.
October 1st, 2006 at 7:46 am
@Antony Pranata: But see the Demo2.avi file (a clip of a cat) bundled with the DivX Player. It is the same as the one bundled with SmartMovie. I don’t think a company as big as DivX, Inc. dare to put the exact same file and exact same help text. They could have made better ones if they really make it by themselves.
Maybe DivX, Inc pay a very large amount (very!) to Lonely Cat Games… how do you think?
October 1st, 2006 at 9:24 am
@yuku: That’s a very good question…
I don’t have the answer right now. I will try to find out more information about it.
October 1st, 2006 at 6:26 pm
All i get is black screen when i start the player on my N91. I dont see any options or controls.
whats wrong?
October 1st, 2006 at 9:15 pm
@bazza: Interesting case. I have tried DivX Player in N91 yesterday and it worked fine.
October 4th, 2006 at 6:43 pm
uh thanks Antony but that didnt help much. Anyways, i did a hard reset and its working now. I have to say, its looking really nice and its FREEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! all the sweetness of smartmovie without the extra cost…..i paid 4 times for smartmovie cos’ i changed devices
October 9th, 2006 at 4:11 am
wanna try again
October 9th, 2006 at 4:11 am
seem so hard to download it ?
October 9th, 2006 at 10:34 am
@lele: Firstly, you have to register the account first. I agree it is a little complicated to download because we have to register, activate the account, etc.
October 16th, 2006 at 6:19 pm
works fine on n70
October 21st, 2006 at 8:04 am
At least, Lonely cat or smartmovie is having a rival and not lonely anymore in terms of offering and creating a quality video player for our s60 phones in particular.

October 21st, 2006 at 8:09 am
@mobilephoneextreme: I fully agree with you. Let’s see what LonelyCat will do to win the competition. Nowadays, I am using DivX Player only (not using SmartMovie any more).

They do not go out of place, but they shutter and lagg….how can i fix this?
December 31st, 2006 at 5:55 pm
@Scipio: I have experienced the same problem. It seems this version of DivX Player for Mobile still has some bugs. Please read my other posting here http://www.s60tips.com/2006/12/06/divx-player-or-realplayer/. It explains some problems that I have with DivX Player for Mobile.

@Victor: I noticed the same thing with the current version of DivX Player for Mobile. It seems the developer has not released a new version yet. Please read also my latest posting here, http://www.s60tips.com/2007/01/01/divx-player-for-mobile-is-expired/.
January 1st, 2007 at 11:47 am
@kom: Yes, you are right. DivX Player seems to have audio synchronization problem some videos. Please read also my posting here, http://www.s60tips.com/2006/12/06/divx-player-or-realplayer/.
That’s why for now, I would recommend to switch to RealPlayer.
January 3rd, 2007 at 5:47 pm
I use it in my n-gage qd, but now it seems that the program expired and there is no new version in the website. Any idea?
January 3rd, 2007 at 8:55 pm
@rui: I don’t think there is nothing we can do now except waiting for the developers to release the new version. I will keep this posting updated when the new release comes.
January 4th, 2007 at 12:45 am

@misael: Yes, DivX Player for Mobile is available for Sony Ericsson P910 too. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen the version for P990. Hopefully soon.
January 18th, 2007 at 8:58 pm
@misael: You can play videos converted with SmartMovie using DivX Player for Mobile. I have tried that.
January 25th, 2007 at 2:09 am
Will it work for Nokia 6233
January 25th, 2007 at 9:09 am

hey is this player good for nokia n 73?
January 29th, 2007 at 9:26 pm
@raz: Yes, this player is for N73 too. I have tried on N73 and it works fine.
January 31st, 2007 at 3:44 pm
I installed the new version of DivX player (0.85) on my Nokia E61 today and watched an xvid rip of a movie. Awesome… Who needs an iPhone when you can just open avi, divx and xvid on y\’r mobile already. Conversion to mp4? A thing of the past. The E61 absolutely rulezzz again. Awaiting my 4Gb miniSD card. Then the fun starts. Got my TomTom on there too!
January 31st, 2007 at 8:25 pm
@Hermdude: I won’t comment on iPhone. There have been so much comments on this phone. But, you’re right. The quality of DivX Mobile is awesome.
February 3rd, 2007 at 12:29 am
Does anyone know i DivX has plans to close this new version of the player, same as they did wíth the last version?
Is it possible to purchase the DivX player so i dont have to worry about it expiring?
February 3rd, 2007 at 8:42 am
@Coach-Z: I think the expiry date is set by the developers because it is still in beta version. I guess there shouldn’t be expiry date for the final version. However, note that the latest DivX (as of this writing) is still beta version too.
February 3rd, 2007 at 11:53 am
Anyone know when this edition expires?
February 3rd, 2007 at 11:58 am
Good question. Honestly, I don’t know. I am not sure whether there are DivX developers who read this blog. If yes, they may provide more information.
February 3rd, 2007 at 12:14 pm
a related question… have you made a comparison between Smartmovie and DivX?
If so, where?
February 3rd, 2007 at 12:21 pm
Because they look almost the same, as the first post also metioned… So for now DivX is free, but at some point they\’re gonna charge us for it…
February 3rd, 2007 at 12:54 pm
Unfortunately I haven’t compared DivX and SmartMovie yet. Actually, that is a good idea for my next posting…
February 3rd, 2007 at 1:12 pm
if youre thinking about topics, how about one where to explain how to rip a DVD movie onto your computer, using freeware.. That could be way cool
February 4th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
pls give me divx player.
February 4th, 2007 at 8:34 pm
You can always download the latest DivX Player for Mobile from http://mobile.divx.com. Look at comment #47 for the direct download links.
February 9th, 2007 at 3:54 am
hi i want to try divx player
February 13th, 2007 at 10:37 am
Definitely in many ways it has replaced the one the smart movie player.
February 21st, 2007 at 1:16 pm
Looks like the DivX Player is the SmartMovie that was bought and customized by DivX, Inc. See the options, help text, font used, and control interfaces… that’s really similar, don’t you think so?
And that means we can enjoy SmartMovie for free legally!
March 8th, 2007 at 2:24 am

Can you play subtitles with the DIVX player? If yes, how?
April 5th, 2007 at 10:08 pm
Ermm.. I\’ve just got my N95 and I converted a movie from AVI to RMVB (Realmedia Player Format) and copied it to my mobiles 1GB sd and it couldn\’t play the video on my mobile only the audio on the realplayer.
So I was wondering if you guys could host the latest version of this DivX player for me to try out because http://www.mobile.divx.com/login is not logging in my correct details on my mobile or computer.
Many Thanks. P455W0RD
