Have you ever tried sending files from your S60 phone to a PC via Bluetooth? Some of my friends are complaining that they cannot send any files to their PCs. They always get “Sending failed” message. Actually I hit the same problem for quite some time before I figured out how to do that.

I will try to explain how to send files using Windows XP SP2 Bluetooth stack. Note that different Bluetooth stacks may require different steps.
- Open the settings of your Bluetooth driver. You can do it by double clicking Bluetooth icon in the system tray of Windows XP SP2 and then select Options. Make sure that you turn the discovery on. Otherwise your S60 phone will not be able to find your PC. If you cannot find Bluetooth icon, then go to Control Panel | Bluetooth configuration.

- This step is really important. Many people don’t do that. That’s why they always get “Sending failed” message. Click Bluetooth in the system tray and select Receive a File menu.

- You will see a dialog saying it is waiting for connection from another device.

- Now you should be able to send files by selecting Options | Send | Via Bluetooth menu in any applications that support it, such as Gallery, File Manager, Contacts, etc.

[…] This tip assumes a native WindowsXP BT stack is used, as opposed a 3rd party driver e.g., IVT Bluesoleil. What’s important is to make sure to enable BT discovery and then put the computer in a file-receive mode before initiating the transfer from the phone. Read all about it here - Sending Files from S60 Phone to PC via Bluetooth […]

Hey, thanks! I learn something new every day! I hadn’t spotted that, mainly because I’d hidden my Bluetooth system tray icon…

You always come up with those easy tips but that are so hard to find
Nice post!
Maybe you should write I guide how to send files between two S60 phones as well. As you might know you canīt forward files that has file ending .amr-wb or any other that is protected by Nokia Closed Content List between to S60 phones (or to other models).
I think it is a kind of stupid feature that you cant forward MMS or other media files even if the files are not copyright protected! Thatīs the hole meaning with MMS and a smartphone, so I understand many people gets irritated about such a weird function.
What are your opinion regarding the feature Nokia Closed Content List?
But, of course there are ways to come around the problem..I guess you know that. Since your page has so much valuable information maybe that could be something to think off posting in your blog?
Cheers,
Henrik

@Henrik: Nokia Closed Content List (CCL) is actually forward-lock mechanism (similar to OMA DRM 1.0’s forward-lock). The content is bound to the device’s private key. So it won’t be possible to send it to another phone. Unless if someone has cracked it.

I again Antony,
I am fully aware of what Nokia Closed Content List is, but it is pretty easy with a file explorer program like FExplorer to get around this “problem”.
Since CCL works with so called MIME recognition for the files that are banned to leave the device you can simply open FEexplorer and rename the file extension from e.g. .amr-wb (or some other that gets banned) to .txt. After that you can send the file trough bluetooth or e-mail to another S60 device.
When that device receives the file like a text file to the inbox you open FExplorer in that phone and then search after *.txt or go to the mail folder. When you have found the file you cut the file from that folder and paste it in under e.g. \Sounds\Digital. When you have done that step you can rename the file to the same extension it had before, and then it will work.
Tested it myself when I sat and playing around with different ways to tweak the phone to do things it wasnīt intended to.

hiii
thank you for this guide
i figured it out myself a while ago but what i can’t figure out is to send files from pc to my nokia 6680 phone
i always get that message
The file transfer failed because the receiving Bluetooth computer or device did not respond.
If you sent the file to another Windows XP computer, that computer must be running the Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard. If you sent the file to a Bluetooth device, make sure the OBEX File Push Profile is installed.
is it something i have to activate 1st in my phone or wat
plz help

@Henrik: This is new to me because according to Forum Nokia’s documentation (http://www.forum.nokia.com/info/sw.nokia.com/id/418a9cf9-9d49-44b7-911d-f6c24f9d77d2/DRM_Developers_Guide_For_Nokia_Devices_v2_1_en.pdf.html), the concept of CCL is similar to OMA DRM 1.0’s forward lock solution:
“Nokia CCL is a so-called Device Policy forward-lock solution, which means the device is hard coded from the factory not to forward certain content. The implemented solution works based on MIME type recognition and allows the device to register content as copy protected based on this information.”
I will find out more info about this.

I used to get “Send failed” errors all the time when attempting to send files from my Nokia N70 to my iMac by Bluetooth. The problem ceased entirely after I had the firmware upgraded on the phone from the original 2.0539.1.2 to the current 5.0609.2.0.1.

@Peter: Interesting case… IMHO, any software with non-working Bluetooth feature should not be released to the public.

Hi again Antony,
I know, I have read those documents as well. But, even if the phone is hard coded from the factory you can just rename the file extension before sending the file to come around the problem.
Maybe this wasnīt intended from Nokias side to work, but I have tested it on all S60 2nd Edition phones and it is possible in all those at least. Havenīt had to test same thing on any 3rd Editiion yet though…

This is not the way it’s done, This recieves 1 file at a time, i have 300 files i want to send to my PC. I’m not about to click recieve file each time. A few years back with a 7110 i was able to bulk send all the files. How can i do this? rarther than the labourious 1 by 1 method.

i ask if ther was any software or chips for installing bluetooth program?
March 10th, 2007 at 10:06 am
@Dr. Salahddin: If you are using Windows XP SP2, Bluetooth driver should be available. Most of the Bluetooth chip uses driver from Widcomm (http://www.broadcom.com/products/bluetooth_supportlinks.php).

I just wanna add for WIDCOMM users about the “sending failed”.
1. Right click the BT icon on SysTray then choose Advanced configuration:

2. Go to Local Services tab. Highlight the File Transfer under the Service name and click Properties.

3. You must define the Bluetooth exchange folder location in your computer eg. My Documents\My Bluetooth Exchange:

That’s it. Now, you can send data from your phone to PC. Tested with N70, Toshiba laptop XP Home ed.

I have the same question as Chris - How do we trasnfer multiple files from the phone to the PC instead of clicking on receieve a file each time. There is Bluesoleil but that is hardly working with my computer but atleast the good part is - it allows 5MB at a time!
