Synchronizing MP3 Files from Windows Media Player to S60 Phones
Posted by Antony Pranata under SynchronizationSome of Nokia’s S60 phones are branded XPressMusic, for example 3250, N71, N80 and N91. Do you know that we can synchronize XPressMusic phones with Windows Media Player (WMP)? It supports WMP 10 and 11. Note that some devices do not support DRM-protected music files yet. Some newer devices, such as Nokia N95 and N81, do support it already.
Here is how we can do it:
- Insert your phone to the PC via USB cable. Select Media Player when the phone asks connection mode. If your phone does not ask for connection mode, go to Connectivity | Data cable. You should be able to select Media Player there. Note that non-XPressMusic phones do not have this option.

- If you insert your phone for the first time, Windows will install necessary driver. If your Windows is not able to find the driver, try to insert the CD-ROM that comes with your phone package. Locate a folder that contains an .inf file (the file naming may vary for each phone, for example “N71 Windows Media Player 11 driver.inf”). After you install the driver, your phone will be recognized as WM portable device.

- Now you can launch WM Player and start synchronizing MP3 files to your phone. You can also set WMP to synchronize automatically each time you insert the device.

Good tutorial for media player sync.however i want to know whether this functionality is available for nokia 6131.This phone also work with wma songs.

I haven’t really tried it on Nokia 6131. However, according to the page from Nokia (http://www.europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,,81729,00.html), currently only a few S60 phones support XPressMusic.

I have an N80 (firmware 3.0617.0.6) but no option for Media Player. Why might this be? Any way of getting it?
June 30th, 2006 at 7:40 pm
@Charlie: Have you tried to check Connection | Data cable. Are you able to change the connection mode from this application?
July 3rd, 2006 at 4:50 am
I also have an N80 with the latest firmware (3.0617.0.6) and the media player option is missing. I have checked Connection | Data cable and it isn’t there either. We only get PC Suite - Data Transfer - PictBridge OR Ask on Connection.
I’m on Orange in the UK if that makes a difference
Just called Club Nokia and they said if it isn’t there it isn’t supported on the phone. I pointed out that it was on other N80’s (e.g. Antony’s) and they said to call the Network and ask them. Basically they just passed the buck as she didn’t seem to know what she was talking about!

Firstly, I would like to highlight that this site is not an “official” site from S60 or Nokia. It is just a personal blogging site. If you find something wrong here, it’s better to contact me directly because Nokia customer care doesn’t know anything about this site…
About Media Player support in N80, I will try to find more information about it. It could be that it was not supported in those firmware release. It might be that it is supported in newer firmware release only.

if you have problems with media player, use “transfer music” app from pc suite !
August 19th, 2006 at 5:48 pm
I was wondering if you can email or post the N80 WMP drivers, my firmware supports it but i do not have the drivers.
August 19th, 2006 at 6:17 pm
@charlie: Sorry, I couldn’t post it. I don’t want to get into trouble with Nokia…
August 19th, 2006 at 6:34 pm
@charlie: If you want to play a little bit “hack”, you can do this.
- Download .inf file of Nokia N91 from http://www.nokia.com.sg/nokia/0,,91973,00.html.
- Open it in Notepad and modify the following lines:
Go to [Nokia] section and replace the USB’s VID device with this PID_04F1″ (previously it is PID_0485 in Nokia N91).
Go to [Strings] section and replace “Nokia N91″ with “Nokia N80″.
That’s it. Now you have the .inf file for Nokia N80.

Hi I am trying to get my newly updated N80’s media player setting to work also, but am having trouble with the missing driver. I have tried Antonys steps in post #11 but still no joy. I am using Windows X64 (64-bit), do you think this is the problem?
Cheers!
August 22nd, 2006 at 5:35 pm
@Pinks: Are you using WMP 11? For WMP 11, the .inf file is a little bit different.
August 26th, 2006 at 4:47 am
@Antony Pranata:
i am using wmp11!! I need the different INI file… thank you!

@phil: I haven’t found .inf file for WMP 11. It could be because it is still in beta version. However, I would expect that the driver will be released very soon. Not sure if anybody else has seen the .inf file somewhere on the Internet.

The new firmware for Nokia N80(4.xxx.x.x), made available by Nokia after the middle o August, adds the option of Media player on the connections options.

I dont have that Inf-File on my PC…..
September 6th, 2006 at 3:34 pm
@Mod
Sorry 4 doublepost:)
I dont have that Inf-File on my N80 cd..
September 6th, 2006 at 8:39 pm
@Slick: From my understanding, the earlier version of N80 doesn’t support WMP synchronization. Unfortunately, I am not really sure the first version that support it.
Actually if your device has an option “Media Player”, you can use my trick at #11. Download .inf file from Nokia N91 and do a little bit hack.
September 10th, 2006 at 7:16 am
i have got nokia 3250 and its .inf file supports wmp10 but not wmp11 which i hav installed lately. Is there a different driver for wmp11 for 3250.if yes plz send me the link

@Akshay - The official drivers from Nokia doesn’t support beta-software like wmp11 are.
October 12th, 2006 at 2:22 am
What skin is that you\’re using for wmp, pls?
October 22nd, 2006 at 4:03 pm
This will probably sound stupid most of ytou but where exactly is the root folder of my n73 memory card? Cheers
October 22nd, 2006 at 6:02 pm
@Craig: The root folder of memory card is e:\. This is the same for all S60 devices.

Open the file “c:\WINDOWS\inf\wpdmtp.inf” in Notepad
Find the lines that read
;iRiver PMC
%GenericMTP.DeviceDesc%=MTP, USB\VID_1006&PID_4002
%GenericMTP.DeviceDesc%=MTP, USB\VID_1006&PID_4003
and then directly under that paste in
;Nokia N80
%GenericMTP.DeviceDesc%=MTP, USB\VID_0421&PID_04F1
Then save and recconect your N80 and windows will install the drivers for you…

April 2nd, 2007 at 4:52 am
Antony, great tutorial which I read after seeing that my S60 Nokia 5500 has WMP support. I got the driver from the nokia web site and when i connect the phone via USB it goes through the usual processes to install the device (as your screen shots above show). However, when I click finish, my PC immediately \’finds new hardware\’ and goes through the same process again and again and again.
It\’s really frustrating and I was wondering if you or anyone else reading has any suggestions I can try.
By the way, in data transfer mode, WMP recogonses the device OK.
Many thanks and keep up the good work.
April 3rd, 2007 at 4:53 pm
@Jonathan: I have seen this problem too. For me, this problem happened when I connect my phone in PC Suite mode. The solution for me is: 1) remove cable connection; 2) Select Settings | Control Panel | System | Hardware. There you can see your device with question mark; 3) Right click your device and then select Uninstall.
After that, try to reconnect your device in “Media Player” mode.

can the Sport 5500 sync WMA DRM files with WMP 11 ??? (tries to connect it to Vista, but it seems the mediaplayer modes cannot find the right driver - eventhough I got the newest PC suite and downloaeded the WMP 10 INF file for 5500)

WAT ABOUT BLUETOOTH SYNC?
December 25th, 2008 at 11:53 am
WMP11 recognizes my Nokia E65 on bluetooth, but not my Nokia N82. PC Suite works fine for both phones on bluetooth. USB cable works.
