Yesterday a friend of mine asked how she can transfer her contacts from her old phone to the new one. She has tried to send the contact as business card via BT to her newphone. Unfortunately, on her new phone, she has to save all the contacts one by one. It takes a while because she has hundred of contacts.
I think it is a common problem for many of us too. How can we transfer contacts between phones? There are several ways to do that, but probably the simplest one is by using memory card. Here are the steps:
- Make sure your memory card is inserted in your old phone.
- Launch Contacts application and then select Options | Mark/Unmark | Mark all. It will select all contacts you have on the phone.

- Copy all the contacts to the memory card by selecting Options | Copy | To memory card.

- Now you have your contacts in the memory card. They are stored in vCard format under \Others\Contacts folder.
- The next step is to transfer your vCard files to the new phone. If your phones use the same format of memory card, for example Mini SD, it is much easier. Simply remove your memory card from the old phone and then insert it in the new phone.
- What should you do if your phones use different format of memory cards, for example one is using Mini SD and another one is using RS MMC? You need to transfer the files using memory card on your PC. Copy all the files under \Others\Contacts folder from one memory card to the other one.
- OK, now you have the memory card inserted on your new phone. Launch Contacts application then select Options | Copy | From memory card. It will import all the vCard files from the memory card to your Contacts application.

- That’s it.
Update (11-June-2006): I have received some comments about contacts synchronization. Thanks to all of you…:) Actually you can also synchronize contacts using Nokia’s PC Suite and PIM software, like Microsoft Outlook. I have been using them and it works fine (although sometimes there are a few fields not synchronized correctly). If you have PC Suite + PIM software or may be iSync from Apple, you may not need this feature at all.
In some newer S60 phones, there is an application called Data Transfer, which can be used to synchronize contacts between S60 phones. Check Tools folder to see whether your phone has this application or not. It is very convenient to use. Thanks to Alexandre for pointing this out.

I don’t think this is really relevant….
There’s an built in app that transfers contacts, calendar appointments, gallery files, etc from the older phone to the new one. Just using wireless transmision (BT or IR).
This way, through memory Card, I can even admit that it’s quicker, but if the old phone has one card format and the new one another one, it’s just too many steps…

@Alexandre: There is a problem with wireless transmission (BT or IR) if we have hundred of contacts. We have to save each contact in Messaging application one by one (it takes too much time for hundred of contacts). Do you have a tip to save all contacts in one shot? If you have, could you please also share it in this forum? I’ve been trying to use that, but no succeed…

It is also possible to use Nokia’s PC Suite and PIM software, like Microsoft Outlook, to transfer contacts from the old phone to the new one.
Firstly, synchronize the contacts from the old phone to Outlook. The secondly, synchronize te contacts from Outlook to the new phone.

ah the joys of Windows
Get a Mac. then it’s just a question of iSync (assuming your old phone and new phone are supported) which “just works”

Just found this option a couple days ago, preparing to upgrade a daughter’s phone (3250) firmware. On my 7610 I use Smart vCard for this purpose.

I am constantly switching between different (S60) phones, and having contacts in Outlook has been the best solution. No problems whatsoever, and it works also with S40 phones.

There’s an app called “data transfer” in the tools menu. This app comes built in since Nokia 6680 (at least - i don’t know about 6630). What it does is sending throug bt a .sis installer to the other (S60) phone. Then it install a program. After that, the two phones get paired, and you can select which kind of data you want to retrieve from the old phone. I use it and is really easy and reliable…

@Alexandre: Yes, I noticed this application too. I have even tried to transfer contacts from my 6680 to N80. Unfortunately, for some reasons it didn’t work for me. When N80 received the .sis file, it doesn’t allow me to install it in N80. I think it is because N80 uses S60 3rd Edition while 6680 uses 2nd Edition.
Another thing: my friend is uprgading contacts from her N-Gage QD to N71. I don’t think Data Transfer is available in N-Gage QD yet.

@Jukka: You’re right. I’ve been using Outlook to as my “main contacts database”. So I can change between phones easily. It is very convenient for Outlook users…
I found only a small problem, some fields are sometimes not synchronized correctly.

@Roland Tanglao: I never used iSync in Mac, but I checked the web site. It seems it offers similar feature to PC Suite + Outlook solution.
The tip I described here is for non-Outlook (and also non-Mac users).

Antony, seems that you are trying to initiate the transfer from wrong phone. You should launch Data transfer app from your N80 and let it send the sis file to the 6680. It doesn’t matter if the source phone runs S60 2nd edition, because the target phone recognises the sw version of its counterpart before sending the app (at least it worked for me with N70 and E70). I have no idea whether also 1st edition devices are supported.
June 11th, 2006 at 10:29 am
@Mika: Thanks for the tip. Yes, it works when I initiate the connection from N80!
June 11th, 2006 at 2:52 pm
yes antony, iSync on my Mac allowed me to easily change from a 7610 to an N70 without any problems at all! of course this requires you to have a Mac and use its built in AddressBook App to store your contacts and the built in iCal app to store your appointments and meetings

My old 3650 (1st edition) does not support exporting to vcard.
But the Data Transfer application on my brand new N80 did the job. After bluetooth pairing, the app on the N80 send the SIS over to the 3650 and it installed fine. During the bluetooth data exchange the app on the 3650 only crashed once. But after simply restarting it on the 3650 and pressing continue on the N80 it resumed syncing.
I transfered more then 250 contacts, 50 calendar entries and 80 gallery files fine.
Very nice utility, thanks for the tip.

Is it possible to move then use Contacts from the phone memory to my memory card? I ask this because apparently some of my contacts are of a size that Backup will not read, therefore my data is not fully safe with the Nokia PC Suite backup software.
TIA (Thanks In Advance)

I’m trying to move my contacts from nokia 6600 to nokia n70 .. Now the N70 does have the “data transfer” application under tools but I need it to be in the 6600 but it’s not there, Now is there I way tath I can get the “data transfer” application itself on a SIS file and install it on the 6600 to be able to export the contact to the n70..
Any help will be appreciated
Note: I’ve tried transfering the contacts using PC Suite for nokia but it will not work because the two mobiles use different versions of PC Suite..
July 4th, 2006 at 10:10 pm
@Mohammad: If you have PIM on your PC, such as Outlook, you can use it as a “bridge” between your two phones.
Btw, isn’t it possible to send “Data Transfer” application from N70 to 6600?

@Rahul: Sorry, I cannot really help you because I have never used Nokia 6265. It is not a S60 phones.
Btw, why can’t you use Outlook as a buffer to transfer the contacts? What was the problem?

Well…
I think the best thing is to kill two birds with one stone. I have an account on zyb.com which is a phone backup service provider. They support more than 200 syncML phones(Every new phone has syncML). My data is backed up with them so i have no worries of losing phone data and if i want to change the phone all i need to do is to sync it with the server and all of my phonebook contacts and calendar enteries will be downloaded to the new one. Pretty simple isnt it? and guess what? its free.. furthermore they have a really cool sharing feature.

Rich5500sport: You can only initiate the transfer from 5500 Sport to N70 because N5500 Sport is newer device. Actually, even though you initiated the transfer from Nokia 5500 Sport, it should synchronize the contact in both directions.

I agree with the post done earlier about zyb.com. It really works well and we dont even have to go through lenghty prosedures to transfer our contacts. Since im using zyb, i recommend that you try it and it does more than Nokia PC Suite can do for you. I am not very techie and dont know much about the technicalities involved but zyb works for me.
