Installing Self-signed Applications in S60 3rd Edition
Posted by Antony Pranata under Third Party AppsThere are several S60 3rd phones already on the market now, for instance Nokia 3250, N71, N80 and N91. There will be some more phones in the near future. One of the new features of S60 3rd Edition is mandatory signing. It means S60 3rd applications have to be signed otherwise they cannot be installed on S60 3rd phones.
What is signing? If you want to find out more about signing, you can read the following FAQ from Symbian Signed (https://www.symbiansigned.com/app/page/faq). Basically application signing is a way of adding a tamper-proof digital signature to an application so that no one can modify the application. It will prevent the users from installing malicious or hacked applications.
The goal of signing process is good, but this has created some headaches to some people. One of the problems is installing self-signed application. What is self-signed application? It is an application that is signed with developer’s certificate and key. Some applications use this kind of signing, for example SExplorer.
There is an option in S60 3rd phones to enable or disable self-signed applications. If you disable it, you will not be able to install self-signed applications. Some people choose to do it so that they can only install applications from “trusted” sources. With so many Trojan viruses these days, it is sometimes wiser to disable this option.
If you enable it, you will be able to install any applications, including self-signed applications (but still you cannot install unsigned applications). Some people prefer to enable this option because it offers have greater flexibility. When you try to install self-signed application, you will get warning message (see picture below), but you can still continue the installation.

How to enable or disable the installation of self-signed application? To change this option, go to Application Manager (usually it is located under Tools folder). Select Options | Settings menu. When you select Software installation, you can see two options, i.e. Signed only and All. If you choose Signed only, you won’t be able to install self-signed application. If you choose All, you will be able to install any signed applications.

Which one is better, to enable or disable self-signed application? It depends on your need.
Compatible devices: S60 3rd Edition, Nokia Eseries.

but how can I install software made for S60 v2 for this new v3 ???

You cannot install 2nd applications in 3rd phones. The underlying operating systems between these two phones are not compatible. The developers of the applications have to port their applications to 3rd.

[...] There was an interesting blog posting from Simon Judge, Crippled Branded Symbian Phones. He has a concern about some Symbian OS phones that do not accept installation of self-signed certificate. It seems that some operators have requested to the phone manufacturers that only signed applications can be installed on their phones. [...]

I did change the option to All and continue to install a program but I still receive a message Unable to install a protected application from the supplier. Is there another setting I need to do in order to install this program?

@kltan: Which application are you trying to install? It seems that the application uses UID from protected range. For more information about this error message, please read my other blog posting here http://mobile.antonypranata.com/2006/06/16/interpreting-signing-error-messages-in-s60-3rd-edition/.

Hi,
I am getting an “unable to install error” on a E50 piece when i try to install the signed application - Gmail mobile. It takes me through the entire 158 Kb download exercise, but pops the error at the end. Also, I can’t seem to access the application manager. On clicking the app manager icon it just refreshes the screen.
Firmware ver on my piece is V06.41.3.0
Any tips on how this could work?

@mufi: GMail mobile is a Java app; so I don’t think the problem is related to self-signed certificate.

Hi:
I’ve got a problem when i install my signed application in my n95. it appears: “security warning: application is for development use only. Continuing installation may cause serious problems to your device”; after that i select continue and then it says “Unable to install”
I’ve checked that my software installation is ok (all). What’s the problem?
thanks
November 29th, 2007 at 7:51 am
@Miriam: Which application is that? “Unable to install” normally means that the application is trying to overwrite a file that already exists.

Dear All,
I’ve a Nokia E90 & trying to install IVCM 2.1 cracked version. The zip file i downloaded from the website contains 4 different file. i’ve already set the “Software Installation” to “All” & “Online Certificate Checking” to “Off”. The 4 files are as follows:
1.Interactive.Voice.Call.Master.Setup.SIGNED.Do.Not.Resign
2.Interactive.Voice.Call.Master.Crack.Unsigned
3.APSServer.Crack.Unsigned
4.Audio.Server.Crack.Unsigned
The 1st file gets installed only. And for the rest of the 4 files it shows “Certificate Error. Contact The Application Supplier”. No matter what i do. it does not get installed.
Please please please Help me on this.

I’d like to try some nokia programs on Samsung SGH-i550. Since developers locked their symbiansigned.com opportunity, I permanently check the internet forums, blogs etc for a solution, but unfortunately I still could not find any.
Thanks a lot!
