Update (28-Oct-2007): Now there is an easy way to access GMail account from your S60 phones. Google has a nice standalone application, called GMail for Mobile.
Google provides us a service, called GMail Mobile, where we can access GMail account using web browser in our mobile phones. Actually, as S60 phone users, you don’t need web browser and GMail Mobile to access your GMail account. You can use Messaging application and download your messages to your phone using POP3 protocol.
Which method is better, using web browser or POP3? Each of us has our own preferences. I myself would prefer POP3 because I can download my messages to my phone. Later when I need to read my email again, I don’t need to connect to the Internet. Once again, it is just a matter of taste. You can compare it with accessing email using Outlook/Thunderbrid and Web-based email.
How can you setup GMail mailbox on your S60 phones?
- Firstly, you need to enable POP access on your GMail account. Logon GMail and click Settings | Forwarding and POP.
- Enable your POP Download by selecting “Enable POP for all mail” or “Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on”.
- I would also recommend selecting “keep GMail’s copy in the Inbox” so that you can still access your email from the web interface.

-
Next, you need to setup a new mailbox in your S60 phones. Launch Messaging application.
- Select Options | Settings | E-mail | Mailboxes. When the phone ask to create a new mailbox, Select Yes. If you have already a mailbox, the phone will not ask you to create a new mailbox. In this case, select Options | New mailbox. Enter the following information for your new mailbox (note that some S60 phones might have different menus and labels):
- Mailbox name: GMail
- Access point in use: [Select Access Point of your operator]
- My e-mail address: [Enter your Gmail address]
- Outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com
- User name: [Enter your GMail address]
- Password: [Enter your GMail password]
- Incoming mail server: pop.gmail.com
- Mailbox type: POP3
- Security (ports): On (SSL/TLS)
- Port: Default (993/995)
Note: On some S60 devices, you have to specifically enter port number. In that case, enter 995 as port number for POP3.
If you need to enter port number for SMTP too, then use 465. - APOP secure login: Off

- There are actually some other settings you can set, for example your name, signature, etc.
- Now you are ready to go. If you go to the main menu of Messaging application, you should see your GMail mailbox there. You can download your messages or write new messages.

Update (04-Jan-2007): You can also use GMail Application for Mobile to check your email. It is a Java-based application developed by Google.

I use this from my mobile
http://gmobile.sayni.net
Its wonderfull
April 20th, 2006 at 10:38 pm
Thanks for additional method to access GMail.
I know some people like to use ProfiMail from Lonely Cat Games (http://www.lonelycatgames.com/). It is not free, but more powerful than built-in S60’s Messaging application.

If you want to avoid 6630 giving you untrusted site warning, use pop.googlemail.com instead of pop.gmail.com.
This may apply to other S60 phones.
June 13th, 2006 at 5:31 am
Dimitri is correct, using pop.googlemail.com will avoid the certificate warning error. Thanks for the tip, Dimitri. Also, this is a great site, thanks!

its really nice to set it up and it works fine. im using it from saudi arabia now..thx for info….
July 22nd, 2006 at 7:42 pm
Hi,
thre is an even simpler way to setup POP email wthouth worrying about the parameters: use the setting wizard available in every S60 phones! You wil have to select only country, operator, POP provider and enter your id, password
July 22nd, 2006 at 8:58 pm
@Boro: Thanks for the additional info. You’re right, we can setup GMail account from Setting Wizard too. I never realized this…
July 26th, 2006 at 3:02 am
is anybody able to send mail through s60 phones. I was able to send mails but for the part one month it has stopped. Whenever i try sending a mail i get an error “email sending failed. Please check email settings.” all my settings are correct. i use airtel- mobile office in India. Is it possible that my service provider has blocked smtp authentication, although it denies it.
July 26th, 2006 at 8:01 am
If your provider said they don’t block SMTP server, may be check the security port (see screenshot). It might be they use non-standard port.
July 26th, 2006 at 11:14 pm
in s60 phones the only option that works in security for gmail is 993/995. But gmail mentions a different port for sending mails ie. 465 or 587. How do i change the port in s60.
July 27th, 2006 at 12:14 am
IC… I thought you are using SMTP from your provider (and not from GMail). I haven’t had any problems using GMail SMTP server.
Btw, have you tried using Settings Wizard application? Boro suggested that we are able to set GMail account from Settings Wizard too.

Hi,
I want to configure my official id to N70. But for that i need to make the port number of pop to 9091. but in N70 i can only see 2 options. How can i change it? How can i configure the custom port?
Thanks

I need to know the charges for Gmail Mobile in Airtel Prepaid.. and is it possible in N72
November 14th, 2006 at 8:22 pm
@Srivatsan: I don’t know the data rate for Airtel. I think you should contact your operator and visit their web site the check for the rate.
For Nokia N72, it should work without any problems.

Hi
I have a Nokia 6260. I have downloaded the Gmail Mobile Application. I am using Airtel connection in India. But when I am using gmail mobile application in nokia 6260 then it is not working. It says loading…….
What is the problem?
January 4th, 2007 at 11:59 pm
@Gaurav: It seems Google has changed the port number to 995. I will update the screenshots of this blog accordingly.
January 8th, 2007 at 1:48 am
Thanks for replying Antony Pranata.
I have done the email settings but in my mobile phone there is no port settings defined what to do. Rest of settings I have done but there is no port settings. Tell me one thing more as Google has launched Gmail Mobile Application(Java Based). Is it necessary for the application to do the email settings in phone or it is not required if we use Gmail Mobile Application(Java Based).
Thanks
January 8th, 2007 at 8:23 am
Yes, you can use GMail Application for Mobile. I have reviewed this a couple of months ago, http://www.s60tips.com/2006/11/08/featured-freeware-gmail-application-for-mobile/.
It’s actually a little bit strange that you don’t have option to change the port number. Which phone model are you using?
January 8th, 2007 at 11:58 pm
Well I have Nokia 6260 model. The process u have told in above pictures, I have done the same settings but when I connects thru Access Point then after sometime it says “Web server not found”. What is the possible reason. I am using Airtel(Bharti) Service operator in India.
Also Please let me know as this will download all emails to mobile phone. Does the operator charge these email download charges also.
January 9th, 2007 at 12:04 am
Yes, the operator will charge for your GPRS connection.
Have you tried GMail Application for Mobile? Does it work with this application?
January 9th, 2007 at 1:45 am
No GMail Application for Mobile is not working. It is saying loading……… continuously.
January 9th, 2007 at 9:17 am
@Gaurav: I think you need to check your data connection (GPRS/3G) whether it is working or not. It looks like something is wrong there.
Have you tried to browse a web page using Services/Web application? If not possible, then you may try to re-setup your data connection. Contact your operator for this. Usually you need to send SMS to a certain number to your operator and then you get a configuration back sent via SMS. Alternatively, there is also an application called Settings Wizard which you can use to configure your data connection.
January 9th, 2007 at 9:10 pm
Hi,
My data connection is alright. I am able to open other websites like Google.com, Yahoo Mail etc.
But gmail is not opening with the same data connection. It is also neither opening with Gmail mobile application nor it is downloading with the Gmail Mailbox in the Messages.

Hi Antony,
. I have a nokia 6630 and use a Hutch/Orange connection in Chennai,India. I am able to access websites using my GPRS connection (and SUCCESSFULLY read/send email for gmail.com using the native browser as well as third party browsers Opera). I am unable to access email using GMail App (says loading… forever) and via Messaging (times out) and via ProfiMail V 2.27 (third party app, times out).
Great page you have put up but unfortunately things dont work for me
It seems to me my problem mirrors that of Gaurav ( 2 comments on Jan 9th 2007).
I have applied the settings as instructed.
It also seems that a lot of people with this problem are from India. Is it anything to do with the mobile operators here ?? I dont know anyone who has a nokia S60 phone and a working GMail app in India. if someone has managed to do it please post a comment here or mail me at vkumar.karthik@gmail.com.
March 30th, 2007 at 11:22 pm
Hi Karthik,
You can access pop3 email only if you are subscribed to Hutch Access (Rs 149 monthly rental). If you are on basic GPRS (Costs Rs 49/month)then the only way to access gmail is through the native browser or gmail application (http://gmail.com/app)
April 2nd, 2007 at 5:52 am
Hi Prajwal,
Thanks for the info. I had no idea pop3 email could not be accessed from the basic GPRS package.

April 10th, 2007 at 8:26 am
@love bhawsar: Have you checked the port number? Normally, the device assigns the default port number, 110. We have to change this to 995.
About charges, it depends on your operator. They charge per KB usage. Please check with your operator.

Download another IM, such as Agile Messenger or Palringo (http://www.s60tips.com/?p=550).

hi all.
if you have Nokia N70m mobile and you want to access gmail account from it you can do so with OPERA MINI BROWSER. first install it into ur mobile and ask your service provider for GPRS,MMS,INternet setting and choose 0 rental plan. when setting arrive save them by pressing option and save. after than open opera mini browser and type there ur required web address, now you can able to access free internet on your mobille. speed also good on surfing. Just check it.
December 24th, 2007 at 1:30 am
It dint work on my nokia N72.
It asks for username and password.
then it says “Loading..”
Then nothing happens, even after hours of keeping it thatway!
I am using Airtel NOP serviece.
Even i cant access Gmail or Orkut through Opera. But if i enable Mobile Offiece, every thing starts working fine.
I think Airtel people are purposely blocking it here.
December 24th, 2007 at 2:11 pm
Gmail, Orkut, Yahoo mail, P0P3, SMTP… etc are blocked by Airtel on NOP. So if you are using NOP dont bother do troubleshoot problems.
Airtel Customer Care people never accept that they have blocked any thing. They are plain lairs! Same thing works on mobile office.
December 28th, 2007 at 8:35 pm
gmail application working fine . but the builtin e-mail gives error message web: server not found . i have N70 i have done everything just like how u said and my GPRS connection is fine . wat is it then ?
January 6th, 2008 at 4:28 am
@abhijiit
Even i cant access pop3 mail and get some third party apps like gmail app, rss readers, etc to work using the airtel net on phone (nop) plan.
In my understanding, this is because of wrong GPRS data configuration model provided by airtel. The access point or gateway they give doesnt provide the direct socket or http connectivity that most third party apps need. The mobile browser on the other hand doesn\’t need this direct connectivity, and so it works fine.
Here\’s an article that explains this more..
http://wapreview.com/blog/?p=466
Ofcourse this is what i understand. If there\’s anyone who\’s using the gamil app with airtel nop, please let me know.
